Default problem with LAN game

hi all, as what the topic says, I can't see and join others' (those who are at somewhere around the world and not my house mate ) games but I can if that person is my house mate.

I used to be able to join others' games. Is it because the hosts of those games that I could join were living in the same country as I am? Or is it something else? Can anyone tell me the reason? Thanks.

Welcome to computer forum

the reason you can only play with people in your house is because there is 2 types of network, your privet and your public. your privet is the one only you can see. so you can see any one in your house but public is a more complex ip that any one can see. however they cant connect to your privet if you have a firewall. so the reason you can only see the people in your network is because of that

also if this does not make sence, i have just had a all nighter!!!!

thanks for the prompt reply.

of course it does. okay, let's put it in a simpler way. I want to play warcraft with other people by using some client (eg: GG Client). so, if my firewall is on, I can't see and join their games isn't it? but I don't seem to be having any problem seeing and joining their games (weird, maybe I got the concept wrong). the problem actually arises when I'm trying to join their games using some software that require us to enter the host's IP.

o. maybe i got something wrong

edit: ok after stumbling over reading (your post is fine it is my head ) i understand. to join you need there ip adress. so there public. you can easly get this from some javascript (forget what it is) but you can go to speedtest.net and it will tell your ip. another way is hamachi http://www.hamachi.cc/download/list.php that will let you communacate with your friends.

oops, sorry, I think there's something wrong with my post.

what I wanted to say was after entering their IP, I can't see their games. by the way, you've answered one of my other questions which is not in this thread. thanks.

lol. um that means that you have to port open. this is hard since you have to find the port the computer connects to. i think hamachi will do what you want since it has what is called upnp or universal plug n play. so no need to have port forwarding. you just have your friends get it and you setup and group and it has all there ip addresses and you just connect to that one. if you dont you have to find the post the games goes through and go to your router and add the settings

I personally don't like hamachi that much because we need to know the name and not the IP. and for me, I feel that it's somewhat more complicated than the one which requires us to enter IP. so, if I choose the hard way, I need to port open? what is port open? is it same as port forward?

yes. i was just mening you need a port open in your firewall. so yes port forwarding. i think each game has a different port that needs to be open
