Default iPod Not Syncing

The title says it all. On my laptop my iPod doesn't charge now that I am in college. Its not a big deal on the aspect of the battery because I have a docking station above my stereo so it gets charged. But when I plug it into my laptop, via a USB laptop cooler it never syncs. Its making me mad due to the fact that I bought a new album via iTunes and I can't get it to my iPod, anyone have any clues as to why my iPod won't sync?

Check and see if the itunes process is running, I can't quote it off the top of my head, but that process or service has to be running in order for iTunes to recognize....

No Brian I can't go straight through my laptops USB ports, which makes no sense. But when I tried that, my laptop shuts down and I have to take out the battery pack and wait, put the battery back in and turn it on..takes about 5 mins but its annoying.
