Default A Couple of Quick Vista Questions

Hi

Very soon I will be commencing a large amount of data imputing for a company that a made some software for as part of my A-level Computing Coursework. However now the time has arrived that I will spend hours typing in data, I feel the urge that a laptop will be most beneficial.

But my question is this!

The software (.EXE) was made with Visual Basic 6!! Can this be used on Vista (it works in XP), but I am aware it is very old.

Also I used Microsoft Access 2003!! Can this be installed and run on Vista. Or do I have to use 2007

If neither of these two pieces’s of software can be installed and run on a Vista operating system then I see no point in spending money on it, the laptop would also be bought for the purposes of uni in 08, so not just buying it for one reason.

Hope that makes sense

The only way you will know for sure is by using the same trial and error method used for previous versions of Windows when they first came out. You have to test each program/desktop app to see if it's compatible and supported on a newer version. VB 6 has far more to do with CCC+ programming where you don't get into drivers and problems seen between versions of Windows that way. Some old 2000-01 games run well on VIsta when tried. All you can do there is see how it goes.

Ok thanks

but what about office 2003, sort of had the feeling office 2007 was the sole version compatible with vista?

Thanks again

With any new version of Windows you can expect that many desktop apps will need to see a newer version. Surprisingly pc games like some 6-7yrs at this time that were 98-ME capatible and run on XP even run on Vista when tried. Yet some newer 2005 games like Metal of Honor: Allied Assault won't even install on Vista? Each application, game. etc. needs to be looked at separately.

Without working with any version of MS Office here that is the advice I can pass along. Not too many work with VB at this time since that was mostly during the 95-98 days. I suspect that you would want as well as need a newer "Vista ready" version to see the best results there. MS is notorious for seeing a need for a newer version of software for every new version of Windows.
