Default computer doesn't work

So, I went to upgrade the ram in an old computer (used for internet only) and I noticed it didn't take ddr memory and thats all I had. So i grabbed another older motherboard/cpu that took ddr and put it in the case. After plugging everything in, nothing worked. I could hear the power fan and the hard drives warm up, but nothing on the screen. So I grabbed one of my newer motherboard/cpu combos and tried that. now I only hear the power fan, no hard drives and nothing on the screen. I tried 3 different screens, so I know thats not the problem. Any suggestions?

I've tried a few different types of ram, and I swapped the power supply when I tried the newer mobo/cpu to 450w unit. Its like the computer isn't turning on at all. nothing on the screen at all

You could have

1. Somehow shorted the motherboard if you didnt discharge yourself
2. You did not connect the 4pin connector
3. The video card somehow died.

I thought I may have shorted the mother board at first, but I tried another one with the same video card from the first and still nothing. I then tried a 3rd motherboard with the built in graphics card and still nothing. So its not the video card, I made sure the 4-pin was connected, and I can't imagine I fried 3 motherboards.

The light on the hard drive comes on, but I don't hear it spinning or loading or anything. Maybe its my power supply?

CPU, have you tried another one?

Also, may be something on the case that is touching all of the boards, an extra brass stand-off or something/
