Is the shore level the only part of the game? I went up and took out all the combines, destroyed the two helis, came back to the bottom in the little makeshift elevator, and then the fishermen said his thanks. Then I was returned to the start menu.... I got this free, I am a Radeon owner
Thanks |

HL2 Lost Coast is yes the only level. It was designed to be a tech demo for what they could do when they didn't have to cater to the lowest denominator that is lowend gaming pc users.
They wanted to showcase what they could do with the source engine beyond what they did with HL2. I know its sad that the pleasure only lasts for those few short minutes, but run around and look at the scenery, it is pretty damn beautiful, even for its semi-aging self. Its ok, I just admitted I haven't played CS:S lol. Seems like everyone plays that...or WoW. lmao

Lost Coast is a HDRI demo of one level to show what they could of done with the main HL 2 game. It was made after they made HL 2. Later they added HDRI to Day Of Defeat
HDRI gives far more contrast range lots of very brights of all colours and lots of very darks so dark rooms have a colour range rather than being totally black. skys, suns, lights, explosions are blindingly bright. To add to the mix they add glow effects and bloom and simulate your iris in your eye adjusting to the light. To really see the effect you need a screen with a high contrast ratio, older and cheap TFT screens suffer from a contrast ratio far lower than a CRT screen. If you have a Nvidia card lower than series 8 you will have to disable antialising to see the HDRI. ATI owners can use HDRI and AA at the same time on older and new cards. Later Valve added HDRI to Day Of Defeat [WWII HL 2 addon multi play game] one level at a time not been on steam games for ages does anyone know if they HDRi the entire game as well as CS??????? Lost Coast was basically to show case HDR, which was before HL2 and CSS had HDR as an option.

This image is from a HDRI render of Lost Coast but its in a bog standard 24bit image file here.
![]() Bloom adds glow highlights only often used to help fake HDRI and also to compliment it. HDRi ads the colour brightness and darkness range your real eyes see giving better colour range and contrast than standard photography. Theirs a HDRI image format that shows true HDRI images alot of HDRI images are jpeg format you get a better image but its not a good example of hdri To make HDRI pics with photography you have to take lots of pics at least 8 of the same thing. Starting with very dark pics and taking brighter and brighter ones till you have a blindingly bright one then composite them all together in Photoshop CS2 you get a massive colour brightness range equal to what you see when looking at real stuff. If you go outside on a nice day the sky is so bright it causes your iris to close up but you can still see the detail. Older graphics would wash the detail out going that bright. If you go in a cave you see the shape and detail inside even though it's very dark in there.older graphics would show patches of black or grey. HDRI is the visual range we miss out on not having HDRI. Latest graphics cards are built to deal with HDRI without a loss to performance. Theirs a HDRI image format that shows true HDRI images on a screen, a lot of HDRI image examples on the net are jpeg format but they give you an idea. Last edited by CG man; 09-03-2007 at 07:48 PM. |
