In the last 2yrs. the main problems seen with Steam/Source have been with the Half Life trilogy of Half Life, HL2, Episode One, and after October 9th Episode Two arrives. Others have had their problems with Counter Strike: Source at times. Vista saw a few sound glitches in EP1 in two game maps only while the Steam engine is always wanting you to download another ATI update for that type of card.
You will find a good number here play the multiplayer games like CS:Source as well as games made by other companies. The must connect online even for single player concept is still rather recent in many case like Steam was in 2005. Older games simply required having a disk in the drive while there you have to log into an account first just to see whch games are installed as well as the popup for gaming news.

I've installed steam twice, and subsequently uninstalled quickly afterwards. I forget the first reason, but the second time was because it started hogging the CPU, up to 30%, when I wasn't online, or had limited functionality online.

I've never had any troubles worth mentioning. I think it's crashed once or twice? I just let it auto-update. Meh.

I leave Steam unchecked in the msconfig utility and simply load it manually when either going to HL2 or see if anything new is worth a look on the ad window. Sometimes those popup on their own with it configured to load with Windows seeing a reason for that. That can tie up IE at times to a degree.
Any game can see lockups at times. A sound file getting caught in a loop is typical. With EP1 on Vista it was simply beta sound drivers while waiting for the finished driver set from Creative at the time. What make video card are you running there? With ATI models the problem seen with Steam was on the older AGP cards with the catalyst control center enabled on some occasions depending on which version was installed. For problems with both video and sound sometimes the latest drivers are a cause. Other things like antivirus programs are also well known to cause problems with various games when left active.
