Default P.O.S. Xbox360 controller won't work

I bought a brand new xbox360 wireless gamepad for my PC today. I followed the instructions exactly as they are printed in the book, yet the gamepad still doesnt work. The wireless receiver thing says it's connected, but all four of the quadrants just blink whenever the controller is on. I've updated the drivers for it and searched google for the past hour but I haven't come up with anything. Please help me before I seriously go crazy and hurl this piece of garbage out the window.
