Seth Sandler has updated his instructions and software in order to make it easier for people to follow. Check out his blog post here:
http://ssandler.wordpress.com/mtmini/. I built one and it's not too hard. Not counting the time to download the software, I'd say it takes about 30 minutes to get everything together the first time. If you do build one, my advice is to try out the demo_smoke.exe program first. It's easy to use.
In terms of the darkened box, this isn't a big deal. You do need some kind of light external to the box, however, that is bright enough for your fingertips to cast a shadow on the paper.
