According to Toms hardware it's just alittle better than a 7950gt. $400 would be a complete rip-off.

i didnt know this last gen's hardware was almost as good as the 8800, i thought it was such a large leap as to be completely incomparable

Well, as far as shader operations, the "theoretical" number is nearly 10 times faster. Of course, it can't ever be that according to how it works, but still.
