Default Grinding noise from computer

So I had to reseat my cpu fan because it was running hot. After i did that I turned it back on and everything was running fine. So I closed the case and started to turn it right side up. I heard a deep grinding noise which sounded like a cable hitting a fan but louder. I set it back down on its side and opened it up. I think I saw a spark...then the computer shut off. I'm not sure about the spark, it could have been my imagination, but it was under the cd drive where a lot of cables were. After that the computer wouldn't turn back on so I figured it was the power supply (which it was).

What was that grinding noise? I've had a psu go out on me before but not like that. Think any other components could have been damaged? I don't have another psu to test with right now.

Can you see anything that appears to be burnt? if you think it might not be the supply, buy a dirt cheap one to see if it power up and if it does then you can buy a quality unit.. But i don't know what the grinding noise could have been unless your hard drive just went out. When you press the button, nothing happens.. no fans or nothing, right?

No, nothing appears to be burnt. I did have another psu but it didn't have all the right connections. When I plugged that one in all the fans started spinning. Previously nothing would happen when I pushed the power button.

I actually think the grinding noise could have been a cd spinning in the drive because it happened when I started to turn it right side up. But that wouldn't explain why it wouldnt turn on. This one's got me stumped.

Just buy an so-so one at an local Bestbuy or PC store, if you use it and it IS your PSU then you can refund it an get an quality one.

I am guessing that when you flipped the case over the cables got cut sending an short back up there, maybe frying your PSU, blowing an fuse, or fried your motherboard.

It shorted, the short blew the fuse inside the PSU...
