Internet freezes on my friend's laptop. What can I do?

Hi all. Since this is my first post, I would like to say hi to everyone in this forum. My friend has an old laptop which is saying that every time when she goes to the internet explorer, it freezes her laptop. What can cause this problem? And if there is a major problem, what is the best solution that I can do for her to fix it?
Sorry for the fact that I don't have any specs on that laptop. The only thing that I know is that it is old, as far as what she said. please respond, anyone, thanks!

... how old? 486 with 16MB isn't gonna get you far.

I wish I knew how old it was but I won't get to see it until she brings it to me in person tomorrow. I assume its probably still one of those laptops that have xp or windows 98. What do you think I can do? I just want to be ready to fix the problem, or if I have to wipe out the computer completely...

As in "It froze and had to use Task Manager to close"? or "It's sooo slow it's like it's frozen"?
