Default Installing OS

Hello all, I have a Gateway Solo 9150 laptop running Win98 first edition. I have the system restore cd for that pc but it only has the drivers and no OS. I also have a system restore cd with win xp for an emachines pc that died and no longer around and i want to install that on the Gateway. Can this be done?

i dont think so the recovery cd you have is for a diffrent pc so if you go to install it you will get an error and the install will terminate.

yeh, there are are 2 possibilities. 1. it is a restore cd with an image on that it restores to the hard drive (needs to have the exact hardware) 2. It's a windows xp cd branded by them which you CAN install on any machine BUT you won't be able to activate it AND it would be effort to get all th drivers. Unfortunately you'll just have tto buy it. If your laptop is old then I wouldn't recommend it anyway. you need atleast a P3 500 and 256MB RAM for it to be anywhere near useful

Most likely not, because many restore CD's rely on a dedicated partition which contains files for the restore CD. If thats the case, then it will not work.

Others include the full version of Windows on the restore CD, however some of them will check the hardware, and if it's not an e-machines motherboard, then the OS may not install.

you need the 98 install cd, since the os is nearly a deccade old you will be able to buy a genuine one very cheaply. in fact its only about 5-10 pounds on ebay.
