On many a gaming system the preference is often to simply stop the creation of the paging file using hard drive space for virtual memory. You can have your own custom sized paging file by planning double the size of the amount of physical memory installed on the system there.

For 1gb that would simply be 2gb even a little more for the maximum amount. Windows will reserve drive space(usually 2gb) even if the paging file option is disabled. Usually the minimum is about 1 1/2 times the amount of memory installed.

Spyware/Adware/programs running in the background
are all potential problems.
Look at your processes under the Task Manager, google any suspicious ones to see if they are legit or spyware/adware/virus.
Also memory intensive programs like games or in somecases photoshop may limit your abililty to open several windows/programs due to lack of ram.
If you have a lot of startup items they may be contributing to the problem.

You will find that games actually use less ram then people think they as far as dsktop ram available while vpu ram is the item more likely due to to graphics levels. A program that captures video or burns dvds will chew up ram as well as cpu time.

Multimedia especially the Windows Media Player especially sees the cpu running at higher temps when run for long period of time while being just as hungry as games for physical memory.

As far as antivirus and adware/spwyware removers they usually remain inactive until triggered or you simply start a system scan to see those load into memory. Once freeware used for cleaning up useless temp folders left by installers is called CCleaner or the crap cleaner by nickname found at http://www.ccleaner.com/ This tool will also clear out your IE history and offline content if those items are left checked when running the free cleaning tool.
