Default help speeding up my laptop

Hi guys, just a quick question really. I use my laptop for uni work, browsing the net the usual but its beginning to slow down a little. Programs sometimes take a while to open and shut down etc an so i was wondering is there anyway to speed it up. When i shut a program down, it closes bit by bit for example think back to the old days of dial up when you download a picture an it slowly opens the picture, well this is what my laptop does when shutting a program down. Any ideas??
thanks guys,

Do you have the specs of the laptop and what OS is installed? I would start off with the basics, such as running disk cleanup, disk defragmenter, and uninstall any apps that you no longer use or ones that you dont know what they are.

I would then also go to start > run > dxdiag, and un-check all the processes that you know of, that you dont want to run on startup.

You may also want to scan for viruses, spyware, and adware, as those can slow down your system.

EDIT: Why did you double post?

I would go to Start > run > dxdiag

And why are you posting the same comments in both threads as well?
