sure, if the gateway hard drive has windows on it, it will probably have to be reinstalled as it will blue screen on start up. Speaking about the sheer hardware aspect it should work just fine.

i did put it in but the thing just sits there. i cant even get it into safe mode it goes to the screen were it ask you to go into safe mode, last known configuration etc. one i choose ether one it just sits there for hours and nothing happens

yeah, your operating system won't run because it's looking for all of the hardware from the gateway, the only thing you can do is re-install windows. In addition you probably can't legally use that copy of windows because odd's are its the non-transferable copy that came on the gateway computer. they like to screw you over like that.

You wont be able to boot off that drive, you would need to re-install Windows on it.
