i could get the mac pro for around the same but it seems geared toward like a workstation or server. ( 4 scsi hdd ) , $900 raid card...

Mac Pros are their professional high end work stations. They are used widely in any kind of audio/video and engineering environment. Their servers are called Xserve, and they are rack mount servers.

This just comes down to desktop vs. laptop....If your friend really needs portable, go with the macbook >_>.
