well, i have this idea, and i think its pretty viable!!! im not sure if its ever been done, but i want to put it together in a cad program. it is an automotive part, specifically its a transmission. i am downloading the program now, it was freeware from alibre software, and it says its capable of putting together 500 + parts, even though my system will be rather simple. can anyone tell me how to get started with something like this? im going to be very confused, im sure, so hang in there!

All they've gotta do is put a big spring on the ground where they think it's gonna land, or send a mission to the moon to erect a sign that says "Welcome to Earth". |

Autodesk makes an application called Inventor, which is used for this type of thing. Its not free and its not cheap, and I am not sure if it is the industry standard or not anymore but Autodesk is a very huge company. I know at one point they definitely held the market share on this sort of thing. GM used Autodesk products to design all their cars at one point, however I have not bothered to keep up with the current technology they use now. You could start googling from here though and probably find your answers.
