Default My computer gets to the xp loading screen and restarts.

I've tried a lot of different stuff and it still doesn't work. I don't want to reformat the hard drive 'til I can back up the hard drive. But that's been proven impossible since 3 other hard drives that all OS's installed don't work and just give the "NTDLR is missing" error, which is understandable. So I put in the XP disc and and ran DOS and hit fixmbr, didn't work, and fixboot, which didn't work either. I was trying to get to the recovery console, but it just restarted before I could. The hard drive is set to boot first, except when I booted the cd player first for the xp cd. The computer is a old emachine but it has valuable info that my mother needs so what can I do to fix it?

1 thing you might try is put in a small cheap hard drive and install windows on that, then once you are booted, back up the files you need and then reformat the original drive and reinstall.

If the files in question are pictures, email's and such, you could just install that drive as a slave in another computer and pull the items off you need and then reformat that HDD.

All that is based on the assumption that, that hard drive is not already toast, or completely corrupted.

Well, I could try to install that hard drive as a slave, but when I put a brand new hard drive in it, it wouldn't boot, it just said NTLDR is missing. Could I reformat it when it's set up as slave?

Just one more thing to try. Try changing the cable to your HDD. They do go bad some times. And that could lead to the NTLDR message. And make sure your connections are tight.

Also, give the following link a read and try doing what it says about making a NTLDR boot disk.

Well I tried to back it up and it did back up but it said it failed.
This is what failed:

But the backup is still there, so if I reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows, could I put the back back on the hard drive with out any errors and get it to run again?

Yeah, program settings will not back up, that is typical. But to me what would have been the most important is any personal stuff like pictures, music, financial files. That to me is what you should be concentrating on.

Your just going to have to reinstall windows and all the programs you need. There is really no way around that fact.

Concentrate on the personal stuff you have to have. Forget the programs.

Keep the other drive as a slave, and install windows on a new drive. When you get it installed then you can import things like Email address books and files, bookmarks and things like that.

Well it backed up everything except for those files, so if I i reinstall windows on it, could i just restore it?

So what do I got to do exactly to reinstall the OS? Do i set it up the hard drive as a master and reinstall windows, do I reformat it, i'm not sure.

Re set it up as a master, make sure in your bio's that the first boot device is the cd reader. Then boot into your windows cd. It will walk you through reformatting and installing windows.

There are other ways to reformat, but that would take a while to explain, and if you have little knowledge of DOS, then I would not bother trying it anyways.

Well I tried it and it said the hard drive isn't installed, but I know it was installed because I heard and felt the heat and vibrations coming from it. Is there a way to reformat it via dos? I did take a A+ class, so I know a little about dos.
