1. As someone noted the jelly stuff you saw was "thermal paste" or "thermal goop" ... now i find it odd that you identified it as "jelly" which suggests that there may be too much on there (too much = bad)
2. When using a different processor, you gotta re-apply the thermalpaste (very thin layer)
3. Now since im guessing you have an older machine, it is quite possible that some stuff died due to overheating when you powered it (with the 900 configuration) up which would potentially explain why it doesnt work when you try again with the 600
