Question about starting a server for a website.

Ok, Ive never attempted this before but basically Im building a new pc and will have a unused laptop so I thought maybe I could use my laptop as a server for my photography website.

First off, I would probably install linux on the laptop(ubuntu-studio unless you recomend another) to use as the server pc. What I want to know is basically what do I need to do to make this work and what programs do I need? Then, how do I move my website from the yahoo web-hosting server where it currently is to its new home on my laptop and how do I take the domain name with me?
