Default Computer Hangs After Windows Logo Is Displayed at Startup

it happens every time i start my PC. The hang is at the XP logo screen where the blue progress bar continually cycles and before this i also hear a tickling sound inside my case.i always hit the restart button everytime this happens and afterwards it prompts me whether to restart windows in normal mode, safe mode etc.i choose normal mode and that's it my pc runs smoothly again.my problem is only during the start up..sometimes it also hangs when it's already at my desktop screen

what could be the problem is it software or something else help will greatly be appreciated

the tickeling sound is more than likely your hard drive. the best way to recover the data would be a program such as steve gibson's spinrite - www.grc.com costs $89, but i'm pretty sure that you are not iwlling to spend that type of money on a program to recover the data.
Now with that said, does the hard drive light (usually orange light on front of case, which blinks when hard drive is being read or written to) stay on when this is occuring? that would mean there is most likely an issue with your hard disk, if you are hearing noises from inside the computer, thats most probably the case,

Ditto. Find the source of the sound. The sound could be an failing HDD motor or read/write heads.
