I am about to set up a new office in my basement. I want to purchase a new set of speakers so I can better enjoy the music on my iTunes. I am not sure if I should just purchase a new pair of L/R speakers, or if I should also get a set with a subwoofer? Are the 2.1 systmes more for gaming than for just music. I'm not an true audiophile, but I do enjoy my music and I don't mind spending the extra dollars; I just want to make sure that it is worth it.
Thanks is advance. |

A sub is worth the money! 2.1 is just stereo, if you want a serious gaming system you need either the 5.1 series or the 7.1 series.
But for just listening to music a 2.1 with a sub is all you really need, just don't go cheap. The most important component in any stereo system is the speakers. Get the most for what you can afford. If you listen to movies and such then you should go with the 5.1 or the 7.1, but that depends on what your sound card is capable of. |

If you want to listen to music, get a subwoofer!! 2.0 speakers are usually for office computers where sound doesn't matter. 2.1 systems are good, but 5.1/7.1 systems are even better, especially for watching DVD's.

Well my friend , speakers are used mainly for the music and not for the games. You should be looking for the speakers for listening to music . It is not necessary that everyone plays games. So go for the speakers with sub woofers and you will really enjoy the music.

Great. Thanks for all replies. Right now, I don't anticipate watching DVDs from this computer. So if I go 2.1, does that mean that there would be no advantage to getting a digital sound card? Or, will a digital sound card give superior sound? Also, if I go digital sound card, are there special cables that I need for the speakers?

A good sound card will always yield better sound (as long as you have good speakers too). And no you do not need extra special cables, your speaker system should come with all the cables you need.

Ditto! I just turned off my X-230's subs and it sounded monotone. An sub really pay's itself off!

imo mono stereos are only good for that little 'turning on' noise that windows gives lmao
2.1 FTW

Depending on how much you want to spend; my set up is: 2 technics HIFI speakers on the front and two smaller creative speakers behind, so you get the best of both worlds because you can get plenty of bass from the HIFI speakers and you get the surround sound.
