Question Testing my PCI Card slot to see if it's working

I trying to fix up my friend 4 year old Compaq laptop. But I'm having trouble with the laptop's PCI Card slot. Every time I put in the PCI Card, with the software preinstalled, into the PCI Card slot the computer freezes up and card doesn't seem to trun on. Now I tried the PCI Card on a different laptop and it didn't freezes up the computer and the power and link lights turned on. So does anybody know how I get my friends PCI Card slots checked out to make sure it's working correctly. Now my backup plan is if her PCI Card slots is damage, for whatever reason, I'll just buy her a USB Wi-Fi adapter. So if anybody have any ideas if what type of Wi-Fi adapter, like 802.11 a/b/g, and finding some good deal on this device. Thanks for your help .
