network monitoring software

I need a free software that will basically send pings to a host and if it fails or time outs I want to be able to see what time that happened. And It needs to be able to run 24/7 while pinging about 30 hosts.

Okay, i was on the inernet researching how i could boost my wireless signal. I'm across the road from a mcdonalds that has free wifi for customers.

Long story short, i made a Cantenna:

And aimed it at the mcdonalds building. Before i did this we got a "very low" signal at best. now our signal is "low" at the worst, and 3-4 bars most of the time. downloads went from a poor 7-8kB/s to a slightly-less-poor 20kB/s. We would have more success but the mcdonalds building is shielded, so the signal doesn't go too far

My cantenna, however, is not connected to the router, but my usb dongle instead.

WAP vs booster vs upgrade G->N router?

Hi guys
Our wireless router is currently in the "middle" of our house. I'd like to boost the signal from there to my room w/ 2 computers. Currently I get about 3 bars and about 36Mbps on my laptop (G internal) and about 18-24 on my desktop (N wireless usb adapter).
There are also 2 other laptops in the house, both G internals.
Is it better to set up a WAP in between the router and my room?
Is it better to put a booster there?
Or should I just upgrade the router to N? It seems costly because I would have to get wireless N adapters for the other laptops, too, won't I, to take advantage of the wireless N router?

DVD burner won't burn

It won't burn anymore. The past 3 dvd's i tried burning. I know I'm doing it right, I've done this a million times, there is something wrong with the drive or something (not wrong with me). I'm burning an ISO. I've tried using Nero 7 Ultra ISO burner and DVD Decrypter to burn. Nero errors out and Decrypter just sits there at 0% with 100% buffer.
The ISO is no longer protected, so it burned correctly. If I burn it on another computer, it works fine.

Need remote access to two PCs in 2 different ways

Okay, so i have a wireless router at home, my laptop connects wirelessly, and my other PC is wired to the switch. I need to remote control (i.e. use XP from afar) on my PC, and just access my files on the laptop. I wanna be able to remote control my PC from anywhere, and be able to use sound, drag 'n' drop, transfer files, and of course, strong encryption. For the laptop, i also need ALL the above, plus a secure connection, but minus the remote control. Some help would be great.

We are currently running ghost off usb sticks as we were having problem imaging across the network.

Hi all
A little bit of background:
I have a newly upgraded win7 64bit computer (only the OS is new), working fine thru ethernet to a linksys wrt54g. It's an amd 4600+ (old school), with 2 gig ram.
I have a winxp laptop (2 years old) connecting wirelessly.
I got another winxp laptop (less than 1 year old) connecting wirelessly from the living room.
ALL three computers connect fine, use the internet fine. I ran speakeasy.net speed test on all three, and they were within normal stats (I have ATT 3 Mbps DSL line). The stats were about 2.1-2.5 Mbps on download.
The wireless router is on mixed, 11 GHz channel, wep security.

Now on to the problem.
So I had to move our wireless router from my room to the living room.
I bought the linksys wireless usb adapter G (WUSB54GC). Upon installing, realized the drivers on the CD didn't work w/ my desktop. Went to Linksys website, got the new 64bit drivers, installed them, got the wireless working. All of this was when the wireless router was in my room, still.
I ran speakeasy speed test on my desktop, found that it was good.

The issue comes, when I move the wireless router to the living room. The 2 winxp laptops connect fine, speedtest normal. Using the wireless adapter on my desktop, it's unable to maintain a constant connection. Speedtest comes out at 11 kbps. ELEVEN.
I change the usb adapter to both winxp laptops, installed the drivers FROM the cd, not even using updated ones from the website. THEY both work fine, speedtest normal. I even used them both near the wireless router in the living room, and then from my room, all normal.
Changing it back to my desktop results in a failure to run speedtest, websites load slowly, etc.
Called ATT to make sure the DSL line was normal, and they ran the tests and confirmed it was normal.

I even tried pinging.
From wireless desktop to room laptop (100-200 ms), kinda slow.
From wireless desktop to living room laptop AND wireless router -> ping out or get about 1000-3000 ms.

From room laptop to desktop, similar 100-200.
From room laptop to living room laptop and router, <1ms.

From living room laptop to wireless router and room laptop, <1 ms
From living room laptop to desktop a little under 100-200 ms.

I then changed the wireless USB to both laptops and pinged each other and the routers (didn't ping desktop for obvious reasons). Found that the pings were normal (<1ms) and speedtest were fine.

Is this an issue with the usb being incompatible w/ win7? Even though they are win7 drivers from linksys?

Wireless range extender?

Okay here is the situation:

I am currently staying with my dad (i will be moving in) and we are using the free wireless from mcdonalds that is across the road, for now. We will be getting ADSL2+ later. we get a pretty bad signal with his ibm laptop. what exactly do we need to increase the signal? we tried a USB wifi adapter. no luck, not even a signal. I was thinking of a hi-gain antenna but the network card is build into the laptop. Help!

If it matters, we are across the road from the mcdonalds. The laptop is pretty old (pentium 4, 802.11b wireless)

Which piece of hardware will be necessary to increase the signal?

I've heard most Killer NICs aren't worth the money. I found these three just to sort of put them out there. Tell me if you think any of these are actually worth the money, or any money in your opinion.

Dual cable modems?

I have a question about cable modems. I currently have one hooked up which in turn is hooked up to a wireless router located in the upper level of my house. There are a few items in the basement that do not have wireless capabilities but I do have cable TV available. My question is, can I go out and buy another cable modem and using two on the same cable system??

Torrent Limit per connection

I'm living in an apartment with another person, and this guy keeps on torrenting all day. I can't stream anything on youtube. Is there a way for me to put a limit on how much of the speed he can use to download torrent? I can't ask him directly to stop torrenting.

Bandwidth allocation for home pc network

Hi, I don't know much about computers and need help with a problem I am having. I have a room mate that loves to download multiple porn movies at once and all day long. It eats all the bandwidth and I can't get on to do my work or play my games. He's a selfish ass and there isn't much reasoning with him.
I was wondering if there is a way that I can limit his amount of bandwidth. Maybe a program or a certain router that I can use. Right now he is coming off my Linksys router model number WRT54G. Thank you for your help!

networking question

Here's what i want to achieve:

Main computer or OS to run windows 7 for drafting and 3D modeling. I want a separate OS (VM)running for XMBC with HDDs unavailable to the main OS.

Is it possible for the host system to not be connected to the internet while a client is?

I have an idea of how to set this up but not that familar with it and would like to get some help.

Bluetooth not finding any devices

The bluetooth on my computer does not seem to be functioning because it is unable to find two of my bluetooth enabled and visible phones. My phones are able to find each other but neither show up when I search for new devices.

My laptop has windows 7 64 bit and came from HP with bluetooth.

Under device manager every bluetooth device says that it is functioning correctly and drivers are installed.

I have a dv6700t and these are the drivers I installed for it.

Since I upgraded my laptop from vista to 7 is that potentially what is causing the bluetooth to not function?

Weird uploading issues...

Okay, whenever i upload anything, be it videos, pics or audio this happens:

When i click the file to upload (say, on photobucket) the progress bar zooms right to the end and it says 0:00 for time remaining... but in reality it is still uploading the file, because it takes ages to get to the next page (on photobucket this would be tagging the image) No matter which site or what i'm uploading the same thing happens. This happened on vista, and now on 7. It started happening when my internet got capped for going over our dl limit. I've reset the modem numerous times and it hasn't changed. this is very strange, can anyone help? Our internet is un-capped now and it still does this... it is irritating because i never know if the file has uploaded correctly!
