hey guys I posted early before looking at the rules, im now putting this on the recommended format. im going into college and im looking for an efficient laptop to get me through it. thanks again!

1) What is your budget?

500 - 700 dollars

2) What size notebook would you prefer?

not very important but anywhere in the 13"-15"

3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.

United States

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

doesnt matter

5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?

if in perfect working condition

6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

typing papers, need to get through internet fast and efficiently, casual gaming SC-2 (but not very important)

7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?

I'll be taking it to school and from class to class. Other then that ill be leaving it on my desk at home

8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?

I would like to play SC-2 on it but its not a must (i know its not exactly a good price range for that)

9) How many hours of battery life do you need?

Not very important

10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?

Im ok with buying it online

11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.

Any of the windows is fine with me

Screen Specifics

12) resolution is not particularly a big deal for me as long as its neat and presentable. obviously ill take a great resolution to a bad one

Build Quality and Design

14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

no not really

15) When are you buying this laptop?

approximately in the next month

16) How long do you want this laptop to last?

A couple years would be great for the rest of college

Notebook Components

17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?

Don't really know too much about how much size I would need. Im going into college and going to have alot of music and 1 or 2 games on there if that helps

18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?

Cd DVD is a must, Blu ray doesnt really matter

I have an HP 6730b laptop, which is supplied to me by my employer. It has a fingerprint reader. So one day I decided it would be a good idea to setup the fingerprint reader to be a power on BIOS password. When you set it up for a BIOS password it also asks you for a normal word password to use as a backup plan.

The bad part now is that i don't remember what my password 'word' is. I have been using the fingerprint reader at power on for several months and I still do. But I would like to disable the BIOS fingerprint because my IT person complained that if I wasn't around they couldn't access my computer.

I can get into it with my fingerprint but it doesn't allow me to change the BIOS settings without the 'word' password.

Any ideas?

We just recently got my wife's laptop formatted and setup for one of our daughters to use, at college. We thought that everything was fine, until we received a call (today) from our daughter. The laptop keeps shutting down and restarting - on its own. It wasn't doing that here, and we have no clue as to what might be causing it to act like that at her dorm. Buying her another laptop is out of the question, as we are not financially positioned to do so.

I know that there is not a great deal of info to offer, regarding what's going on, but I hope that someone might be able to share something as to what the causative factor(s) might be.

Advanced thanks.

I am planning to buy a laptop that I would mainly be using for the following:
1. Browsing
2. Programming
3. Watching movies
4. Photoshopping (Adobe CS5 preferably)
5. Will use some simple animation/illustration softwares (not frequently)
Which of the following specifications would u suggest?
1. Compaq Presario CQ62-111TX
Intel Core i3 330M
3 GB RAM DDR3
320 GB HDD (7400 rpm)
512 ATI graphics card
Windows 7 premium 32 bit

2. Dell Inspiron 15R
Intel core i3 370M
4GB RAM
500 GB HDD (5400 rpm)
Intel HD Graphics (Any idea how much the video memory is, in this case?)
Windows 7 Premium 64 bit

3. Dell Inspiron 15R (Not sure if this specification is still around)
Intel core i3 3570M
4GB RAM
320 GB HDD (5400 rpm)
512 ATI graphics card
Windows 7 premium 64 bit

I am unsure whether I would really require the dedicated graphics card. If it is not necessary then I can opt for a higher Memory/HDD configuration.
Also, which brand would give me a better value for money?

Hey there, i have an ASUS N61J Series notebook which recently suffered some pretty severe impact damage to the Display. It is a "16" HD/BL" display.

Contacted ASUS concerning repairs and was told impact damage isn't covered by warranty (kind of expected it) and that repairs would cost around $800-$850 plus labour. Considering that i only paid $1250 for the laptop in the first place I'm really not seeing the point of going through ASUS in order to try and maintain my warranty. Just wanting to get some input on some of my other options if any. Is it practical (or possible) to try to repair it myself or are there any 3rd party companies that would do something for cheaper?

any input appreciated.

Hi Everybody,
Ever heard of the Toshiba Satellite A100? Well it sucks. The old A100 was my old notebook with a waping 1.6 ghz processor and 1gb of RAM. THAT SUCKS!!!. Therefore i went on the look out for a decent laptop with over 2.0 ghz and 2 gbs of RAM and hopefully a graphics card that wasnt a stock intel graphics that was going to get me no where... all this for approx. $450.00??? In my view i was lucky... Walmart, last Laptop on the shelf, Compaq Presario CQ62 with such a slick look i had to take a look at it. The specs for what i was in search for was just amazing. With a 2.2GHz AMD V-Series Processor this device has just the right amount of power and functionality, to top that off a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 gpu which will run the basics very easily. This device does come with many other features that improve the functionality but it has its down sides too. One of the cons about this Laptop is that it only has 2GBs of RAM but is expandable with two slots to 8 GBs I smell 4 gbs of RAM coming into play in the future. Another con is the amount of work it takes just to get started with this PC, this computer comes pre-installed with many programs by HP that are really not needed. The only program that i like that came pre-installed would have to be WINDOWS 7 :) and there were a couple of others that were good but most of them had to go. Anyway thats my quick post on my new laptop id there is anything else you would like to know check out the Compaq website.
