I live very near to the equator where we have recently stopped receiving all TV transmissions from the UK. What I would like to do is get a netbook or notebook and have it hooked up to the TV.

I have tried this fairly successfully but I had a lot of trouble achieving a steady stream which made it infuriating to watch. I was watching it on a free service and I dont know if the quality improves if I was to pay for the service.

Anyway could someone please advise me what I need to get a reliable and fast stream for watching TV normally.

I bought an external DVD drive for my Toshiba laptop and set it to Region 2 so I can play European movies. My laptop is Canadian and so its internal DVD drive is set to Region 1. I am running Windows XP Pro. After 3 months of use the external drive will no longer play any movies when plugged into a USB drive on my laptop but it will work when plugged into someone else's machine.

The computer recognizes the drive when I plug it in (it appears in Windows Explorer) and shows it as working normally. It will play a music CD and read a data CD. When I put any Region 2 DVD in the light comes on and the drive rotates forever but does not start to play. Very soon the DVD icon disappears from Windows Explorer, sometimes completely and sometimes to be replaced by a CD-ROM icon. Sometimes it switches between the CD-ROM icon and nothing! Usually, when the DVD is taken out the DVD drive reappears in Explorer.

I have removed the upper and lower filters in the DVD drive part of the registry (as recommended on many internet sites). I have updated the firmware for the drive. I have uninstalled both this drive and the internal drive and then re-installed them to reload the Windows DVD drivers. I have tried different DVDs. I have tried different USB ports. I should add that the drive did NOT suddenly stop working. Over a period of time it became increasingly difficult to launch a DVD from the drive, sometimes taking a dozen goes, with system re-boots. Now, nothing will make it work. It is clearly a problem related solely to my laptop as the drive works elsewhere.

Can anyone help please?

She wants to be able to burn DVD's and I have no use for the spare drive so I thought it would be nice to give it to her!

I installed the drive into the laptop and booted up, and it recognizes it..it plays CD's, DVD's, burnt DVD's but will not copy/burn to DVD-r's

What do I need to install to make it fully functional? Driver? software?.etc

Newly installed (used) DVD+RW drive (NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A) only recognizes about 1/3 of the DVDs and CD/CD ROMs.

Symptoms:
The drive appears in the device manager, ejects and lights up when a DVD is installed. When I put in most DVD's the drive will light up for a second but will not recognize the disk. It is as though the drive cannot recognize that there is any media in it. Certain CDs and DVD it will always load, but most it will never load. The drive isn't broken as it works perfectly in the original computer I pulled it from (so I'm assuming there is some code or program I am missing...?).

What I have done:
I have tried to install the most recent drivers and I have installed the most recent version of power DVD (hoping there was some silly code I am missing). I have checked cables and Boot order and all that.


Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok so i managed to get myself locked out of my own computer. I forgot the administrator password somehow... dumb i know. Im pretty sure i just messed up setting the password so 1 or 2 characters are wrong.

Anyway i went and downloaded ophcrack's live cd for vista and burned the iso image to a dvd. I changed the boot order in my computer so that the cd/dvd drive is first priority. Ithen put the dvd with the iso image into my cd drive and restarted the computer. My computer tries to boot from the disk but after a few seconds it tells me this:

isolinux: Disk error 01, AX=42CC, drive FE

Boot Failed

I don't know what i'm doing wrong im using the vista ophcrack and my computer is vista. I've followed instructions properly. any help?
