I'll try to be as brief as I can here, but please bear with me :o

A couple of days ago, I was transferring data from my computer (Dell Inspiron 6400) to my phone via USB however the data transfer was very slow so I clicked to cancel the file transfer. Little seemed to be happening so I logged off, but after 15 minutes Vista still showed 'logging off...' so I closed my laptop lid in an attempt to put it into standby/sleep mode as it was getting late. I turned the plug off so the laptop was left running on only its battery overnight, and in the morning I plugged it in and pressed the power button, to be greeted with this sound from my laptop (on closer inspection, I realised it was from the hard drive, which is a Western Digital WD1200BEVS): http://www.mediafire.com/?2crmnyoilzw (if you cannot play the file, it is basically 15 sets of 3 beeps, two low then one higher, if that makes sense ) The screen looked like a black screen of death, with the text saying something involving 'no bootable drive'. There was no primary hard drive listed under the BIOS, and the DST Short Test failed with the Dell error code 1000-0141. I have contacted Dell but they weren't willing to help because the drive is out of warranty :(

I have since bought a new hard drive, but I am wondering if there is any way that I can salvage some of the important files off of the broken one, e.g. by opening it up, if it is a mechanical problem (I'm not sure what the beeps mean...). I have tried the freezer method but the beeps still occurred.

I am not very skilled with things like this so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am trying to wipe the hard drive of my Dell Dimension 3000 computer. I am using Stompsoft's Drive Washer. (I think this is Linux based software, and I've never had a problem with it before.)

It starts, and gives the error message: device i823650 does not have a release function, is broken and must be fixed." It then says NTLDR is missing. It will then boot the software, start to wipe the drive, and hang up permanently after a few seconds.

I have tried 5 different hard drives, and got the same message every time. On one, it also said "parameter out of range", indicating there may or may not be a problem with THAT hard drive.

What in the heck is this stuff? What is device i823650?

The computer was working perfectly before I went to wipe the hard drive. Sometimes it says "keyboard error". Keyboard is fine. I tried several others, all fine. But still, occasionally, "Keyboard error".

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Situation: I purchased a new Western Digital laptop hard drive with a capacity of 320GB which I'd like to swap out with my existing 50+GB hard drive in my Dell Inspiron E1505. Using the free trial of Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0, I cloned the old to the new, with the understanding that a partition could simply be extended to make use of the rest of the 320GB. Not so! The rest of the 320GB has disappered. I am looking for a last resort, as every suggestion I have received has not worked. I have tried Diskpart, Disk Management, ****** Partition Master (free version), reformatting, reinitializing, writing zeroes, etc. My hard drive currently remains blank, with 50+GB of unallocated space and the rest of the 320GB has not appeared since the cloning. At the moment, I am not concerned with putting anything ONTO the hd, only to get it back to its original blank state with the full capacity of 320GB recognized. Thank you for any assistance you could provide! :)

So whats the most reliable 1TB hdd? or in your opinion or if anyone has any past experience of bad hard drives or any info that could help me choose...

I was thinking of the "Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 32MB 1TB" cause i've used a few Seagate drives and all seemed to be pretty good + its only 2 platters for a TB hdd.

2) the other issues I have is that my other 320GB SATA hard drive seems to stop every now and then, this cases windows to stick for a few seconds and them come back on. Again, it seems that there is a clicking sound on the drive when the freeze happens.

Is there anyone here who can give me some advise on whats going on?
Many Thanks in advance

I have a PC running Vista with 2 harddrives - both internal. I have been using it for quite sometime with no problems.

But all of a sudden I noticed that when my PC came awake after sleeping that the autoplay kept coming on. But I didn't know why. Since then I have started having problems with that drive.. it's running really slow and chkdsk is coming on when I bootup but hanging and never completeing.

Now the drive freezes constantly when I try to access files.

It seems that my PC is treating my harddrive like a DVD drive or something. Is there some way to fix this?

I have run a diagnostic program from the drive manufacturer - Western Digital.. checks out fine.

My ancient (2003) PC, which I am replacing very soon, has only a 20 gig hard drive. I don't save many files, and was cruising along nicely at about 15 gigs used until about two months ago, figuring I could make it to the upcoming Xmas sale prices.

Suddenly, however, I am down to below 1 gig. My habits didn't change. As a matter of fact, I've been steadily shedding documents and applications, or moving them to disks hoping that would help. It hasn't, I am down to about 500 megs and certain applications are starting to abort, with messages that they need more free space to operate.

One thing I've noticed is that lately certain Norton routines (aleupdate, etc.) are eating up a lot of memory when I check out Task Manager. Also, when I reboot, I get a message that "XPcom:EventReceiver" is shutting down. I don't have XP; I'm poking along with Windows 2000. Also, even though I shut down my internet connection before I go to sleep, I sometimes wake up to find that my computer has rebooted itself about 3:00 am with a "Windows Update," and the machine is really f---ed up. I have to use Go Back to proceed.

Any ideas? Thanks, I know that in computer time, this is a call for help from virtually another century, but I'd appreciate it.

I'm a little confused about external hard drives and external enclosures for hard drives.

It seems the HD companies don't offer their fastest drives in external enclosures - like the VelociRaptor for example. So I was thinking about putting a VelociRaptor in an external enclosure using a SATA connection.

Questions -

What's the difference between a drive sold as an external HD and a HD mounted in an external enclosure? advantages / disadvantages?

What's the difference between a SATA drive and a eSATA drive besides the fact that's it's outside the case and may be powered by an AC adapter?

One enclosure I looked at says "You can't format a new hard drive with the eSATA connection. You have to use the USB to format the drive--otherwise, the computer won't even recognize the unit." Why not?

About eSATA: if a eSATA drive connects directly to the motherboard via a SATA cable, what is the difference between it and any other internal drive? Would it be slower than an internal drive?

Some threads I have been reading have said that Windows 7 64 bit have trouble has trouble recognizing external HD's. If it's a HD connected directly to the MOBO via a SATA cable why would that be?

Speed: HD's are rated as 3.0GB/Sec for example. In the real world it seems that transfer rates are about 50 - 100 MBits/Sec for any given HD. What's the point of buying a fast drive with a fast connection (SATA) if the system will only get you the 50-100 MBits/Sec? Where is the bottleneck in the HD?
