shutdown, no restart

Strange thing happened yesterday. Was working online, Norton put a flag up that there was high CPU usage, a fan kicked on, so I figgered something was warming up. Backed up my work, closed down my programs and shut the computer down. No problems, right? Went back to start back up and no response from power on. System is older, Dell 8400 series that runs 24/7. New mobo back last spring, No indications of any problems prior to this. I didn't have time to tear into it yet, as I had some other issues that were more pressing at the time.

I'm not springing for another mobo, if it's definitely gone (hard to believe though), but I can get another PSU in a day or so. Only other option is to save the HD for a slave so at least I can get my data off, or maybe try to set it up on this machine . Any ideas would be appreciated.

thankx for the reply... like I said had more "eminent" problems at the moment (cold, roof leak, etc) all came at the same time. Least I have a "spare" system to use, although, I'm not familiar with the way some of my programs work with Win7...the old machine was tried and true... no problems.. 24/7/365... no gaming, no messing... it was fine. It took me a few years to "beat it into submission, ", but it's been steady for the past several years.

Considering it let me shut down, "legally".. and backed up at least my working file,, means something. right now, I'm on a Win7 machine.. only a couple years old. The computer that messed up was running xp pro.. current is Win7 Pros, 64 bit system...how about trying to make a slave drive off the old HD, and being able to dual boot??? Just because I have some "old backup" stuff that I need, that will run in XP, (least on the network, the data is from a WIN98 laptop that is almost toast..)
OK, I"ll be looking at a PSU,.. first,.... but I'm still looking at """combining"/dual boot".. just t be able to eliminate extra stuff that's taking up room... ya know.

Had the XP machine working perfect, including network... ran into snags when I introduced the Win7 to networking, and believe me, I like things SIMPLE!!!.

Sorry, I've been around, but not this road, this time...A little age on me...

got another psu on the way.. may help..if it does.. that's great.if not, then maybe I'll need a bit of help/expertise with using the old hardrive with Win7 machine.. in a dual boot situation... Pretty sure it can be done. Keeping it simple, of course

I've been so attached to this "old" machine, that it ain't funny... XP, it let ms tweak it a bit, and never let me down.since... and I'm still trying to figger out Win7 with some of the same programs.. so bear with me, if you will.

Thanks much, I appreciate the help.

I'm noping... for sure... if not.. plan B....can use the space anyway.. here.

Just that I had a "Bunch" of stuff that worked on the old XP machine, what worked well.. Learning Win7 is a "pain"., at times... !!! What isn't broke, shouldn't be.. especially operating systems and hardware! I"ll be back in touch.. .as I said.. some of us older folks came in on the "end of the leaning curve"..., and I don't have any grandkids..!!!, So, it was learn as ya go.., update,maybe...

Not even ready to try to "learn" another operating system.... so hopefully.. a PS will take care of it.

Now, if ya want to learn how to use a chainsaw/splitter, cut wood, and even light a match, I may be of more help.. especially when it's cold!!!

Thanks again,

Update....well, new power supply, no go., still have LED on the mobo, no action elswhere. I think, I heard a one beep.. when we plugged in the power, but it was faint, if at all. .

looks like mobo failure, ???? Cant believe it let me finish a flash data backup before it went south?

Yeah most likely a motherboard failure in my view. When the other power supply was in, was there any LED on the motherboard ?

Yes, LED was on with the new supply, we also checked with the old one, and the LED also was lit. Nothing else was happening..period.. no fans, nuttin

As I said, I hated to think it would be a new mobo, but.. well, it happens. It was an OEM replacement, anyway. Just strange that it let me do the one backup before it bit the dust. Maybe I should just have let the system run... ? Well.. maybe not.

At this point, I'm probably looking to either recovery off the old drive, or (MUCH RATHER) install the old drive in my current system and be able to dual boot. Least I may be able to run/recover some stuff. I'd rather be able to run dual, though,.. unless the headaches get me.. Some of the stuff I have is close to 10 years or better old, on older drives (remember ZIP/floppy_?)

Oh well, I digress...

Yeah. I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago.
System just shut down instantly, it rebooted fine for 1 more boot before it just shut down and never rebooted again.

wonderful, ain't it!!!!!!!!! Heck, had new RAM, nothing else, other than the new mobo.. working fine, just gave me the "finger", ...

Power supply seems ok.. I may be able to put the HD in a USB case, and recover , but that really isn't what I wanted to do. .. I'm much more familiar with "my old XP " system.. took me a couple of years to beat it into submission, but it works/boots much faster than this Win7 machine.,, and I don't do games/video.. (it would be nice, but my sound system isn't compatable at the moment... no problem, I don't need that right now..

Next question... am running Win7 PRO, on this machine... so it should be able to at least work well with an XP machine, latest updates, right?... Least as long as we can get them to shake hands?...

AllI can do is ask right now... sorry for being a bit "ancient"..normally with the stuff I use to work with with, if it ain'[t broke., fix it, or sharpen it"''

I've got some BAD news for you. You CANNOT dual boot with the old HDD connected to the new computer, unless the new computer has the EXACT SAME hardware configuration that your old computer had (same motherboard, same graphics card, same processor);
You CAN connect the old HDD to the new computer, boot up to windows 7, and have access to your personal files (music, videos, photographs, documents etc.,) but you CANNOT boot up to Windows XP, and you CANNOT use your old applications you have on your old HDD without re-installing them again.
Are there any special programs which won't run in Windows 7? Pretty much everything that XP ran, runs in windows 7 too, and if it doesn't, you can use "compatibility mode" in Windows 7, to temporarily emulate a Windows XP environment. If it still doesn't work, you can upgrade to Windows 7 Pro/ Ultimate edition, and use Windows XP mode.
As a side-note, i would like to mention that running windows XP is not a very good idea. Windows 7 is way more powerful (great 64bit-addressing support), secure (UAC), and stable."Learning" windows 7 is not a very difficult task, you're not learning C++ or java, Windows 7 is not a programing language, you don't need any mathematical skills or knowledge about internal mechanisms, all you need to learn is "clicking where does what". It's almost the same as XP, with added advantages :)

Funny, I ran XPEE with a few tweaks early on for years... system was stable as heck..24/7/almost 365,,,,,,"New Win7 machine is a couple years old, I didn't use it hardly at all..cause I didn't like the way the interface is. Sorry......... took me a couple years, and some "tweaks" to get XP working the way I've been used to.. but I really don't need anybody telling me that Win7 "can do it all".. Sorry.. I'm open to suggestions.., don't need anybody in my face.. I'm probably a bit older than a lot of the posters on here.., I wasn't raised with computers.....I learned with pencil and paper!!!!!!!!!!.. nowadays, ya can't do nutting without it. Geeez.. I was LUCKY to get a calclator in high school.!!!! AND, that was back in the day BEFORE CELL PHONES... (Can't use that either,..other than to call, so....) Get off my butt...

I came here with a "stupid question", didn't expect to get slammed.......I got at least one good answer...

Now if you want to know how to plow snow on an an interstate highway.. in the "snow belt"... Maybe, I'll have time to answer you after you're in the ditch.. All I did was ask... .....

I think you're getting me wrong, sir. It was a "suggestion", not a "command". Sorry if I offended you (which i clearly did), didn't mean to!
Anyway, if you want XP, then you'll need to format Windows 7 and re-install XP. Or reinstall XP on the old HDD after you connect it to the new computer, or re-partition the new HDD and install XP on a new partition (if you go for this option, you will need to repair the boot loader or you will lose access to Windows 7 and the system won't dual boot, it would straight away boot to XP). The new computer won't boot with the old XP installation. At best, the system will be highly unstable, and at worst, you'll get a BSOD.
Sorry again, i'm out of here. Someone else will help you out.

well, after a day of turmoil, . I'm going to try to save/recover the old HD.. via USB enclosure.. THEN... go through some mess to reformat/etc.... If it don't chance of rain on me before I get some roof patched, the tire fixed on the logsplitter, Service done on the truck, and enough wood stacked in the house for the weekend...

I KNOW the dual boot CAN be done...with separate HD's, just wasn't aware that I had to reformat everything.....(apparently), and/or use a boot loader program......Nice thing would be to use hotswap drives ... (don't think that's going to happen anytime soon, and I'm not much on thumbdrives yet...

Bear with me..it's been a learning process for the past 30 years!..I was brought up the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"...
