Compaq Evo N600c Charging Issue

Today I received the above mentioned laptop that I purchased cheaply from eBay and it works fine, but has an issue whereby although the battery states it has 28% charge, it will not operate without the AC hooked up.

Also, the percentage never goes up whilst charging either and when the laptop is on, the charge light and logo flash between AC power and charging every few seconds.

I think it may be telling me that the battery is not accepting a charge which is fine, I can understand the battery being defective, but the laptop also came with 2 other batteries and it does this with them too! Yes, all three could defective but I doubt it.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jamie.

Remove the battery and just use the ac charger. What is the make and model of laptop? Are these original OEM batteries or cheap no name replacements?

That thing is ancient. You could always take it apart and verify that the DC jack has all of the proper contacts. Sometimes the charging circuit pin becomes detached which will power the laptop but not the batteries.

Depending on when the batteries were bought and usage patterns it could be entirely likely that all of them are completely dead based on the age of the unit. I mean, that thing isn't much newer than 2001/2002. Single new batteries for people with a lot of load cycles typically die in a couple of years.

Thing is, the charge indicator on the battery shows that it is sitting at around 20%, which correlates with the machine's reading of 28%.

The batteries are all genuine Compaq and it just won't power on without AC power or charge the battery. When plugged in with the machine off the charge light stays solid but when turned on the battery is still at the same level and won't operate on its own.

I know it is an old machine, but I have a 1997 Compaq Armada 4120T sitting on my desk which still has its two ORIGINAL functioning batteries, so why won't this 2002 laptop can't even power on momentarily with a battery that states it has charge!?

What it p****** me off the most to be honest is that I stupidly tested the machine on AC power then left it on charge thinking the battery was charging properly and left the seller positive feedback. Now I realise it is defective and unless the seller decides to be decent about it, there is nothing I can do as I've said I'm satisfied with my purchase as far as eBay is concerned.

I don't know what it is with me and laptops - I can never seem to buy one that works. Even brand new laptops seem to fail quickly with me.

Well the update is that I got some monetary compensation from the eBayer and have written the laptop off as one of those things.

I suppose it is just like me; tired, broken and beyond repair.
