If you are still having problems try this.

Download the official upgrade tool from Microsoft here.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

After you've downloaded the tool plug in an empty USB flash drive (4 GB or larger), double click on The Media Creation tool and you will see the following window.

windows10.jpg

Click "create installation media for another PC" and then "next".

windows10b.jpg

In this window choose your preferred language, what version of Windows 10 that matches your current operating system (for example: if you have Windows 7 Home then you would choose Windows 10 Home) and then pick your preferred architecture, 32 or 64 bit. When you are finished click "next".

windows10c.jpg

Now choose which media to use. Here you want to click on "USB flash drive". Click "next".

windows10d.jpg

If your USB flash drive is plugged in, you should see it listed similar to the example in the image above. Click "next".

After the Windows 10 update installer is downloaded to the flash drive you will have three options to update. One is to install Windows 10 directly by clicking on the "setup.exe" located on the flash drive. Another way is to copy the files from the flash drive to a hard drive (one you are not going to install Windows 10 on) and click on the "setup.exe" from there. The last option is to boot from the USB flash drive and install Windows 10.

I copied the files to a separate hard drive and updated Windows from there. The update worked without any problems.

Thanks WhoX, so does the usb install still work as an upgrade giving you a new free windows 10 key, or is it like a clean install ?

It works as an upgrade (giving you a free Windows 10 key) or you can use it to perform a clean install.

I tried the usb method, when I tried to install by booting from usb the machine came up with a message telling me to upgrade from within windows then cut off the install.

So I then booted into windows and ran the exe file, it went through the install process almost to the end, then yet again cut off and got a windows installation failed message.

Any ideas ? Can Microsoft not just give you a windows 10 product key for the upgrade ?

Did you choose 32 or 64 bit? Did you choose the correct operating system in the drop down menu? What was your install method? I updated two laptops and two PCs yesterday without any problems. I copied the Windows 10 files to a folder on the laptops and PCs first, and then installed from there. Even though Microsoft says you can boot from the USB flash drive, I think that method is for clean installs only.

I chose the correct version which is 64 bit home, I tried both booting and installing from usb flash drive which it would not allow.

So then tried running the exe file on usb drive from within windows, install process went almost to the end and then failed.

Next time I run it I will record and post a link to exactly what is happening.
