how long do you think my cpu will last?

hit 4.7ghz when I decided to try it last night. played a few games of bf4 and it seemed stable, took 1.35v though.

even with that dang new tim that devils canyon has prime 95 hit like 96 degrees but that's known to overvolt and overheat cpu's, did some other benchmarks and stress tests and it never went above 81 I think.

so would you leave it or would you go back to 4.6ghz @1.28v?

I'd stick with 4.6, the gains from an extra 100 MHz per core are minimal at best.

yea it is a huge tradeoff in voltage. but, it works. i think i'll leave it for now. run into ONE problem though and im not gonna bother with more tweaking since 4.6 was stable at 1.28v

both voltages are fine for a 4790k.

But yeah quite a voltage jump just for such small gains. Dont get an intel overclocking warranty FGS :D. Who can tell if you overclocked your chip too far when its fried lol.

Them assumptions though. After nearly 50 years of manufacturing CPUs they probably know a thing or two. That being said, they're pretty lenient with the base warranty anyway so you may be able to get a straight swap if it fails within the normal 3 year period.

Lenient :D. I bought my old 3770k off ebay used and it was fried. Sent to intel for a brand new replacement no questions asked :).

That is way too hot. You need to increase case fan extraction or cpu cooling. Water cooling as well. How many extra FPS do you get at that increase GHz? Also, if you have a second monitor, use it to monitor CPU usage, you'll probably find it doesn't even come close to being 100% used. Drop it to stock. Its not just the CPU, but the VRM etc. The TJ package max on those cpus is like 70oC.

Watercool, or GTFO ;)

nah tjmax is 100 or 110. and I am water cooled, if you didn't read my signature. the cpu tim still sucks compared to liquid pro though. (which I have on my 4770k in my htpc, it was a horrible overclocking chip though)

like I said that was on a hot day, and prime 95 is notorious for that crap. at 1.28v and 4.6ghz the most I get is like 63 degrees.

I changed it back though if you had been reading the thread.

Don't use Prime95 for anything newer than Sandy Bridge. It can pull more voltage than you allow it.

I lol'd :D

haha this made me laugh because I said that in the op
thanks for reiterating though

I've sworn off Prime95 after it kept pulling insane amount of juice from my 8320 and overheating the VRM's. Stresstesting with other software didn't do that.

I think I killed an FX-6300 and/or ASRock 970M Pro3 using Prime95 last night :p Troubleshooting it today.
Anything you can recommend for AMD, Darren?

I don't do a whole lot of overclocking, but the built in Bench in CPU-Z is what I've been using. It's pretty simple just on off switch. Maxed out all of my cores on my 8320 at a consistent 100% usage. Even has a quick benchmark to let you see some gains.
