Alright, I have two computers. A laptop with windows 7 installed on it (installed from a retail bought disk), and a PC I recently built with no operating system. I am aware that I can instal windows 7 to both of my computers from that one disc, but I can only use one, as I just have one license. I was wondering, if I can do the free upgrade to windows 10 on my laptop, since it already has windows 7, and I can just use my disk to instal 7 onto my desktop? I'm not the smartest computer wise, which is why I was wondering. I just want to make sure it wouldn't have any problems or anything before I tried it. Please and thank you for any answers, and I appreciate the help!

There is a workaround. Since you want to get one computer running Windows 7, another Windows 10, you can first backup your Windows 7 and restore it to your PC. Then you upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10. Then both computer should be activated.
Using windows backup and restore tool, you can only restore to a computer with the same motherboard.You can transfer os to another computer with dissimilar hardware restore. Recently I found a freeware AOMEI Backupper Standard that can do this trick. I've tried it and it worked ok.

When you upgrade to Windows 10, the license of your 7 copy gets transferred over to a license for W10, thus making the license for 7 invalid. So you can't have both. I can't fully deny the "workaround" mentioned above, but it's for sure going to be against the Terms and Conditions for the OS and should not be done. You'll need a legitimate license for both machines.

Every machine I have upgraded to windows 10, once you upgrade to windows 10 Microsoft give you a new key for windows 10.
So surely that leaves you 1 key for your original os & your new key for windows 10.

If you read the agreement it indicates that the previous key is invalidated.
