Latency/ip trouble.. Help!!

Hi there,

Firstly, I really genuinely appreciate anyone who would be willing to help me at all.

I'm looking to improve latency for playing call of duty on ps4.

My problem is that I'm trying to find my IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and dns server. My parents recently threw away our computer and we all just use laptops. Is there a way of finding these things out without the use of a desktop pc? I'm sure to some of you this may make me look very stupid but I tried entering the above 4 things from what I could find on the command prompt on a laptop and tried connecting to the Internet on my PS4 but it just says connection failed.

Again thanks in advance if there is anyone that is willing to help me?

There's no functional difference between a desktop and a laptop, you can do the same 'ipconfig' commands on the laptop, login to the router, etc.

Is the connection failing from the PS4 altogether? Are you using wireless for it or a wired interface? What kind of WLAN security do you have set up?

Thanks for messaging me so quickly beers!

My automatic wireless settings work fine but I'm just looking to improve the connection.

When Im in ip config I believe I'm meant to see a title of network connection or local area connection with all of those 4 things below it but on the laptop I don't get either of the headers.

All 4 things are on that screen somewhere but under titles such as 'wireless lan adapted wifi'.

Would it be dangerous for me to post a picture of the black screen with all the writing so that you can tell me if I'm looking at the right things?

Cheers
Tom

I did reply to you just forgot to use the actual reply button... I'm not coming across very tech savvy am I!

No problemo.

If you do an ipconfig /all it should give you gateway information for each adapter. It's most likely 192.168.1.x/24 with a 192.168.1.1 gateway as that's the most common home setup.

I'm just looking to improve the connection.

Do you observe a lot of latency when gaming? Are there a lot of neighboring wireless networks in your area? For gaming I'd always suggest using a wired interface if at all possible.

Yeah, if you are using WIFI, don't. If possible use an ethernet cable. I wired up the house here because I sure as hell didn't want that overhead in my connection associated with WIFI. The only thing I use WIFI for is the laptop. And at one time a SiriusXM radio.

Changing your wireless settings from DHCP to a static IP will not improve latency when gaming. Your best bet is to hard wire it in directly to your router.

No to the game server. If I ping 192168.1.1 I get less than 1ms (average 0ms). I have cable 100mb and it is fine on wireless.
