How to Prevent Windows 10 Upgrade

My Nightmare!

I am attempting to perform a clean rebuild of my Windows 8.1, but Microsoft insist on upgrading to Windows 10 (I do not want it). Even if I allow the Upgrade and then return to Windows 8.1 the first thing that occurs is “Windows Update” wanting to install Windows 10.

HOW do I prevent windows from forcing me to Upgrade and allow me to perform a normal clean installation of Windows 8.1?

You tell it to skip the upgrade. I just did a clean install of 8.1 two weeks ago and was able to skip the upgrade. Just be sure to untick it from Windows Update as well.

I've did fresh install of 8.1 in the last few weeks and have declined the upgrade at the beginning and haven't had an issue with them automatically upgrading to 10. You can hide the update via windows update as well if your scared they will upgrade you automatically.

Damnit Travis.

Sounds so very easy..But had you previously Upgraded to Windows 10 before attempting a clean rebuild?
Even the so called "Return to Windows 8.1" Option in Windows 10 results in "Windows Update" wanting to install Windows 10!

The nag to update to Windows 10 comes from update KB3035583. To remove it:

Go to Windows Update in Control Panel

Click on "Change settings"
Make the following change for "Important updates"
"Download updates but let me choose whether to install them"

Click on "Installed Updates"
Locate "Update for Microsoft Windows (KB3035583)"
Uninstall this update

Note the step to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them" is necessary.
If you leave the default option which is to automatically install updates Windows will just install KB3035583 again!

In the future you will have to manually check the list of updates downloaded by Microsoft and uncheck KB3035583 if it is among them.

Its free, has many improvements (faster boot, dx12 support, better touch implementation, faster version of NTFS, and many other improvements). Really, Win 10 to 8 is Win 7 to Vista.

Well I have to admit after getting use to it, I do like 10. Never like 8, not any particular reason. It just had a ME/Vista feel. I was a pretty die hard 7 fan and have already upgraded all my 7 machines to 10.

If you want to know what I have heard, for sure there are features in windows 10 that spies on you. What is more rumor so I can't say for sure, that if you have any music or media that was not properly purchased, it will be deleted. I say screw windows 10, unless you don't have free music on your computer and you are willing to disable the features that spy on you.

Complete nonsense. Microsoft have responded to these accusations back in August, proven not to be an issue.

There is no Live Movie Maker in Win 10, and my HP printer has been temperamental since I bought it, why tempt fate. If its working don't fix it

Of course Microsoft will say its not an issue. A friend of mine has windows 10 and had to shut services down to stop the spying. The deleting music, is just a rumor for now, I have no solid evidence to suggest it's true. But yeah Microsoft would never admit to spying on people.

Again, this is bs. The issue only related to the Technical Preview, was clearly stated and was subsequently removed from the final build which only collects some data, but nothing different from iOS or Android. Stop making stuff up.

Ok, so that is useful. Perhaps in the past there was data collection which validates what my friend said, good to know it's no longer a problem.
