I got an Insignia USB 3.0 hub for Christmas last year and today I decided to try it out, however, any device I connect to it shows up as a "local disk" and the icon is a question mark.

Also the hub seems to disconnect and reconnect quite often and it makes data transferring quite impossible

Insignia is Best Buy's brand which is garbage. Return it if you can since it was for christmas, may be too late though.

Oh ok. It's too late to return it but I found out that if I removed my external HDD off of the hub it worked fine so I'm using it for my crapton of flash drives to free up some ports on my rig.

What kind of external HDD?

Sounds like a power related issue through USB.
This hub has an external power supply which I was using and the drive is a WD My Passport 1TB. I just put it back on the other 3.0 port on my IO shield. No big deal :)
