Can't access my external hard drive from my laptop

I am having a problem. I can't see or access my external hard drive from my laptop computer. The external hard drive is connected directly to my desktop computer in another room of my house. I can pull up all of the info from my desktop on my laptop except for my external hard drive. Is there a way that I can access the external hard drive from both computers or do I need to buy another external hard drive and keep it near, mostly connected, to my laptop?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Ihave enabled network sharing I believe. That is howI can see the files, etc that are on my desktop on my laptop. As I say, the only thing I can't access from my laptop is my external hard drive. How do I go about sharing the external hard drive? It may be something I have not done yet. The external hard drive is a WD 2TB

On the computer the external drive is attached to, go into my pc, right click on the external drive and click on sharing(depending on what OS its running)

I just tried that, and found my laptop as the only other device, when I went to sharing but still can't access the external hard drive on my laptop. I am running Windows 10 on both computers if that matters. I am sure it is operator error so I will try again. Any further ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
