Sound issues with Windows 10.

Hi,
I previously had a Vista laptop and had no problems whatsoever with sound coming from my external speakers. I recently bought a laptop (HP) with Windows 10. The internal speakers work fine. I recently bought some new external computer speakers. Just a cheap simple brand. To my surprise after plugging it in the one solitary socket in the laptop no sound came out at all. The sound from the internal speakers could only be heard. I had an online radio playing. I am surprised something so important was not checked properly by the designers of Windows 10. What steps should I take to fix this issue? Cheers, duprey

What exact model of HP laptop do you have? When you plugged in the speakers, did you get a pop asking you what you plugged in? Have you checked the speakers in another system to make sure they work?

HP Notebook. PC name is Desktop-UT2214. Windows 10 Home. OS build 10586.104. Version 1511.
After I plugged it in there was no popup. This computer only has 1 port. I had a 2008 Gateway laptop before and it had 2 ports. Also it doesn't plug as deeply into the port as it did with Gateway. Not sure why. Maybe different design. I tried the speakers on my DVD TV player and they worked fine.

That is not the model number of the laptop. Not sure where you are getting that information from.

This is most likely why it won't work. Its got to go in all the way in order to make contact with the contacts on the plug.
Yeah I had trouble finding the model number. My computer is in Japanese. Bought in Japan. Yes , I suspected it had something to do with it not plugging fully into the port. So I have to buy compatible speakers for this particular port on my computer? I did see some speakers with a USB connector at the electronics shop the other day. That could be an option. Here is a picture of what the computer looks like.

According to that image, you have the HP 15-af100. And the single port is for headphones. You shouldn't see any part of the silver prong when its fully inserted. Either your plug is too big or something is wrong with the headphone port.

Yeah I found it strange there was only 1 port with this new computer and it appears there is no port to put external speakers in. So it looks like external speakers with a usb connector might be the way to go.

I am pleased to say both headphones and external speakers worked. I went out and bought a $1 headphone and the pin slid in easily and I could hear everything. Then asked my friend about my external speakers not plugging in. It turned out I was not putting enough force when inserting the pin plug. After some force it went through and I can hear the sound from the speakers. On my old gateway I didn't have to put so much force to plug in the speakers. All good now!

Good to hear. I was wondering if you weren't forcing them in enough. I had a client that had to force his in too.
