The connection on the router says a/n and the strength is excellent.

A 35mb loss right next to router isn't right. I'm literally 5 feet from my router on my phone and get same speed wireless that I do with a cable on my pc.

Could it be that he's got a device using wireless g that is connected to his router?

Laptop is only a year old so it should have N capability.

55 is likely the limit from single stream N (150).

What I have connected is my MacBook Air about 3 years old, Windows laptop about 1 year old, and iPhone 6s about 6 months old. All are much newer than the router. When I open my AirPort utility, it shows 88:03:55:32:32:AD:1D connected to my router along with my other devices. Not sure exactly what that is.

I disconnected all devices and just had one on WIFI and it only helped slightly bumping my speed up to 57 MBPS.

Mac address of some device connected.

I wasn't sure what it belonged to but I think it is my TV. I'm still averaging 90 hard wired and 55 over WIFI. Not sure I'll worry too much about it.

Your wifi isn't going to get any faster without changing hardware.
