Upgrade to 1TB, or use a 1TB HHD in the DVD slot?

Doesn't seem too long ago I upgraded the 256GB SSD to 512GB. I am faced with another challenge because my 512GB is starting to run out of space.

Of course, I can simply buy a new 1TB SSD and swap out the 512GB.

But giving my new hobby is shooting and editing video, I think having a SSD+HHD combination make sense.

I come across this adapter that seems to do the trick. And I do have the original 1TB HHD idling in a storage anyway.

Anyone had tried this arrangement and care to give me some pros and cons insight into this arrangement?

I can recount the times I used the DVD in my laptop with one hand. So I think it will not be too painful to swap out the DVD writer/player. After all, it would not be too difficult to swap it back if I really have to use it.

DVD drives are useless nowadays so I fully agree with using the DVD drive space. Buying a 1TB SSD is probably overkill though, use the 1TB HDD (mechanical) you have and just give the main drive (SSD) a good clean up, so its not bogged down with stuff you should be putting onto the HDD (storage drive)

My only recommendation would be to get a caddy specifically for your laptop. While VANTEC makes good products, I've had fitment issues with universal caddies.

What Make/Model is your laptop and I'll link you to a caddy from an awesome vendor that is for your machine.!

If you decide to swap the dvd drive for a hdd, make sure your laptop BIOS supports booting off USB in case you need to do a fresh install of Windows and your drive died and was replaced.

at what point are you running out of space? Do you just have a bunch of residual data or is it a single project that spans your entire drive capacity?

I'd probably suggest putting everything on a NAS that you aren't using at that specific point in time.

The laptop is a 3 year old Toshiba S855.
I'd like to get a housing that fits perfectly so I don't have to worry about the hhd sliding or dropping.

Yes, I can boot from USB if I want.

I can't find a S855 specific caddy on my go to sites, but there are 2 that fit a ton of Satellite models including other s-series

Whether you get a universal one or otherwise the caddy will screw in, so there is no risk of it sliding out or anything like that.

There are a bunch that fits the Satellite L855 or C855. I wonder if they are compatible to the S855 too?

On one of the auctions in eBay, it listed one for (C655 or C655D) and S855. I wonder if it means that the C655 model is compatible to the S855 as well.

Hard to say, this is why I like finding the right unit, specific for my device, I had incompatible ones before.

If you can't find an S855 specific one, I'd avoid 'trying' an alternate on Ebay. Use a vendor that has an easy return policy.

I'm anti-Ebay ..but thats me

I use http://www.newmodeus.com

It beat the hack out of me to figure out how they can sell it for under $8. The postage would be at lease $1. The mould cost over $25,000 even in China. How many they have to sell to recoup the mould cost?

Thats their burden, not yours... you get the benefit of a cheap product. Even if it doesn't work for you, you can literally throw it away and sleep easy that very same night.

The item arrived this morning. Less than 10 days I ordered it from China. All for $7.50 delivered.

It was pretty painless. Took me 45 seconds to dismount the DVD. Plugged the 1Tb HHD into the adapter. Another 45 seconds to mount it.
Now I am transferring the massive My Documents, Pictures, Video and Music files into the new drive.

Just can't get over it easy it had become.

I have a question regarding the new drive (D:\).
I went into Control Panel and created the default Drive for my Pictures, Musics, Videos and Documents. So in drive D, I have a user directory with 4 different folders. I transferred all my data from C to D, and deleted the original C:\Documents, etc.

I download some app to remove them from my "This PC" in Explorer. Right now, when I am in Explorer and clicked on This PC, it would shows only my Desktop and Download. There is no Documents, Videos, etc.

How can I add Documents, Video, Pictures and Music back to "This PC" and have them point to the new D:\ folders?

PS: I did pin these folders to the Quick Access. If I choose my folder option for quick access, those folders show. But I want it in "This PC" like the way I used to.

All you had to do was go into your user folder and right click on each one you wanted to change location and click on properties. Then click on location tab and change the location to drive d instead of drive c. That would have moved the data for you.
