Need a MS OS to replace Vista on 64 bit computer, but can’t decide on 7 or 10

I know I waited too long and now I don't have a choice but to upgrade soon. My Vista OS is dying and there is nothing I can do to fix Vista. Chrome will not update and my antivirus program is on limited use.

I’ve been told that MS is eliminating Win 7 and soon it will end up like Vista. Amazon is selling OEM packages of Win 7 and Win 10 for $100 each and I’m just not sure which to buy. I know Win 7 will operate on the 64 bit computer because of an old Win 7 compatibility program I ran years ago, but I don’t know about Win 10.

I also have a HP 32 bit Vista computer that I would like to keep running as long as I can for the grand kids before it ends up in the recycle bin and I don’t know what to do with that.

windows 7 is supported until 2020,but win10 is where i would go here.i believe there is a win10 upgrade assistant that will check your systems compatibility, but ive used 10 on some pretty old hardware with no problems.

Thanks aldan, I read some place, think it was on the MS support site that there isn't a Win 10 upgrade assistant for Vista because I did look for one. I still have the Win 7 upgrade assistant on my 64 bit computer, but it doesn't work any more. I know when I did run it, it said that I had a couple of hardware that was not compatible like a TV card and a modem which I had removed.

I'm pretty sure that Win 10 is not compatible with my 32 bit Vista computer and I forgot to check to see if there was a 32 bit Win 7 OS.

Do not go windows 7 at this point. You only have 3 years of support left for it and its not worth it. Besides updates are a hassle for 7 now. What are the exact specs for this vista computer?

I asked a question a few days ago to see if it was 64bit, but it is a GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3R motherboard with a Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 processor.

The other computer is a standard 32 bit HP with multimedia stuff on it, but I can't get to it right now because we had to move some stuff around to install new carpet.

You should be fine for the basic drivers on that board, but not sure about the gigabyte storage controller and intel storage as last driver date was 2009. How much ram does it have?

I have 6GB of RAM and I'm about to order the OEM Win10 64 bit OS and a Hard Drive (WD10EZEX) to do a clean install on. Do you think this 1TB SATA Hard drive will be OK to operate Win 10 and is the RAM OK?

I have another Question concerning my Windows change from 32bit to 64bit.

I placed my order last night for 64bit Win 10 along with a new hard drive. My plan was to install the new OS on the new drive and then copy all my files from the old hard drive to the new one. Now I’m wondering if there is going to be a problem retrieving all my files from the old 32 bit OS.

I only ask because once years ago my work supplied lap top died so I pulled the Hard drive to transfer files to my new laptop, but it said that it could not open the old drive because it was a different system. I never was able to retrieve those files even though a scan revealed the drive was OK. I never did found out what the problem was and assumed it was because the new 64 bit could not read the old 32 bit system drive.

Should have no problem pulling files off the old drive. You may have to take ownership of the files/folders first though. 32/64 bit had nothing to do with pulling files off the drive.

I just stopped by to say I did receive my Win10 OS and the Hard drive to install it on a few days ago, but I'm a little nervous about taking the plunge. I was just wondering what my options are if the installation fails since I do not have MS support with the OEM version.

Very few people actually ever need help from microsoft. Usually the people that are older and have no one that could help them. Of all the systems I've built and installed windows on, I've never had any issues with the installation. You'll be fine.

That's not even remotely accurate. Windows 10 boots way faster than 7 on a regular HDD.
I actually sort of see what he means, particularly if you're an avid user of Cortana/Search. I pretty much use Cortana to find and launch anything that I don't keep on my taskbar. When my laptop had a mechanical HDD in it it was noticeably slower and had incomplete results at first while everything populated.

That said though, it's faster in pretty much every other way than 7.

I went out of my way to disable Cortana because I had zero uses for it. Hell... I barely use "Hello Google" on my phone.

But seriously though, the guy was blanket covering how Win 10 is slower than Win 7 on a HDD. Which is not true. Can't even compare Cortana's search function to Win 7 as it didn't have one.

If you disable Cortana, and just use the local search, it's not slow at all on a HDD. And yes, to all of you who's going to jump the gun at me and claim that you can't fully disable Cortana... well sorry to burst your bubble but it's entirely possible. http://www.howtogeek.com/265027/how-to-disable-cortana-in-windows-10/

When I say Cortana I just mean the search functionality built into the taskbar. I've never spoken to my computer and don't use it for anything more than looking for settings/programs/files.

Also Windows 7 definitely had that search feature, even Vista did...?
