Question about VPNs

So I have just trialled the VNP chrome add on Just Proxy VPN and I wanted to see how well it was working. I checked to see if my IP address had changed but when I went to a news site, like the Guardian it would still direct me to the British site, where I live even though the new IP was based in New York. I changed the IP again to one in Singapore but Google stayed in English and when I Google "what is the current time" it still gave London time, so what is going on here?

I once used Tunnel Bear VPN and when that was on it automatically directed me to US sites, like GUardian US.

A proxy and a VPN are two completely different things. You will have better luck with a VPN. But there are ramifications; does the VPN use port forwarding? Is Webrtc off in your browser? If not you expose your real IP address.

I though it is a VPN? it's called VPN

Only had a go with it cause they give you a hours free trial

What VPNs do people recommend? It needs to be one that will stop the ISP from knowing which sites I visit.

I use VPN.AC Chose the ECC encryption and port 443. That will then look like normal SSL traffic. XOR encryption would work too.

Disable Webrtc. https://www.browserleaks.com/webrtc#webrtc-disable

They may call it a VPN, but it was more than likely a proxy. The websites were getting the actual IP, not the X forwarded for.

It's free for a reason. They were using your browsing stats.

I think the confusion is because it's called Just Proxy VPN. Proxy and VPN are two different things. I use Private Internet Access for my VPN and have been very happy with it.
