Hard Drive on the way out?

I have a western digital 500gb drive that likes to "hang up" for 15 seconds sometimes, particularly when opening Firefox or running scans. In the task manager the disk usage is 100% when a program is only using 4mbps in the disk column. Is that normal? I ran crystal disk and it says it's healthy, however I ran error checking under the c: properties tab and it said there were errors, it repaired them but it's still having issues. Time for a new drive? I don't want to be wasting money if I don't need to.

It does it all the time, I read about notifications and some fetcher thing that I turned off with no results.

I'd probably replace it.

Do you have a copy of the SMART report? Something like CrystalDiskInfo can dump that for you.

You can also run something like a Seatools/DataLifeguard surface scan against it to more deeply validate the sectors and similar. Since you seem to be getting file system corruption I imagine it may come back with errors.

Run Seatools long Generic test, either within Windows or from a bootable USB drive. Sounds like it's going bad.

By "error checking" you meant checking for bad sectors?
If so, that's a dying drive. You can erase the sectors, sure. But more are on it's way.
I always recommend people with sector errors to backup this shit asap and get a new drive.

Yeah I ran chkdsk, it's been stuck at 12 percent for the past hour, hopefully it doesn't take a long time.

chkdisk is a lot different, but if it's taking that long I'd say RIP

Also make sure you back up your data ASAP if you have anything valuable on there.

Yeah I'm thinking it's a lost cause. If I turn off my system while it's running will it affect my disk at all? What's a good drive for around 80 cad? I've been looking at Seagate barracuda drives.

I've had bad experiences with both, this is the second western digital drive in three years that has crapped out on me. Are hybrid drives worth it?
Hybrid drives are not worth it.

What WD drives are you buying? 500 gb WD Blue? You could be buying old stock as drives less than 1Tb are getting rare.

Yeah those are the drives I have. I noticed that when looking for a new drive, they even go up to 8 gigs, I have been out of touch for a long time. Is it normal for hd usage to be 100% when it's only using 6mbs?

Checkdisk really shouldn't be used to check drive health. If its a western digital drive then use western digital diagnostics program in dos. If you have hirens boot cd it has it on it.

Well I've run a few tests, everything seems to pass, my disk usage still jumps to 100% when doing simple things like opening Firefox or any other program. I've disabled a lot of services and still no change, maybe it's my motherboard?

Can you post a screenshot of your task manager with the disk usage showing. Make sure you click on the disk usage column so it sorts it by most usage listed at the top.
