If windows is saying the drive needs to be formatted it usually means that the FILE ALLOCATION TABLE, (FAT), has been corrupted or doesn't exist. (Caused when you unplugged the USB cable). NORTON's DISK-DOCTOR will retrieve deleted/formatted information. (However this is an old (DOS) program).

When you run the setup program for your new OS, it should offer the FORMAT option. Alternatively, use the EBD option to create a floppy disk to BOOT from. And use the FORMAT command from A: Eg: FORMAT C: /u /c

Nero 6 and later allows you to create MP3 discs directly. If your portable CD supports MP3 playback; burning a data-disc with MP3 files should work.
