    Time to build again

Thanks again for your input. That heatsink/fan looks like it would work well. I definately understand that the GF 275 is a great buy at around $200, but a lot of the higher end cards are these days. The 260 fits in well price-wise and performance wise with what my gaming uses will be. If I...

    Time to build again

I may have to spring for a $90-100 psu. Although a quality 650W psu would probably do just fine as well. Thanks for mentioning the case + psu combo. I think I will stick with an intel system rather than going with an amd am3. I don't exactly upgrade my system every year, more like at least a...

    Time to build again

Thanks for your input regarding AM3, I was considering it. Still looking for psu's in the $75-90 price range. Meaning, without having to send in a mail-in rebate, then wait for 3 weeks for your piddly money to arrive.

    Time to build again

Looking to build a new tower. Monitor is not an issue, same with keyboard, mouse, etc. This computer will be for all-around normal use, some gaming, burning, the typical stuff. I am mostly looking to see if you think my components will be a good fit and nothing sticks out to you in the way...

A little heads up to those who dont use computers much

"but dont expect too much from it, its nice computer for beginners or elderly/parents who dont know much about computers. basic internet serf and email users" It's nice computer, period. Just needs a video card if you want to play games, etc. on it. Btw, my 733Mhz P3 w/ 256mb memory and...

Which CPU would be better for gaming?

This entire forum needs a sticky that says "Read this before posting." The message in that thread should read as follows: If you have any processor question whatsoever, the answer is "Just get a Conroe," regardless of what the actual question dealing with processors was. Maybe then people...

    1st build, gaming computer

People sometimes have this thing called a "budget." This often works in tandem with "intention" when building a computer. Seeming as how you completely neglected that thing called a "budget," you picked a poor processor considering. If you do have the urge to post something probably not well...

    building a budget gaming machine...

Here's my take on your selections. First off, that DFI mobo is not required, and you can easily cut cost by actually getting a solid, lower priced one. Next, your processor looks good, nice pick there IMO. Lastly, that video card you picked would be about my last choice. It is...

    advise on building a computer

Once you have all of your components shipped to you, go to the nearest, cheapest computer store, pay $50-$100, and have them build it for you. Load new, built computer in vehicle, drive home, and enjoy a computer that works.

    Need help with first boot

Yes I have reset the cmos with the jumper. I am running bare post requirements, and can't narrow anything down really. This is all AM2 stuff, and what I'm typing on now is a 733Mhz P3.

    Need help with first boot

Ok, it's been a few days now and here's my status. I went out and bought some thermal compound at Best Buy and reseated the cpu. I plug in my cpu fan on mobo, connect my power switch to mobo, connect my 20-pin ATX cable to mobo, connect my 4-pin ATX 12v cable to mobo, install my 1GB stick of...

    Need help with first boot

I'm using integrated video for now...no video card. I've checked my connections literally hundreds of times. Also...even though all of my led's work, I still have no sound, no beep at all. My monitor I'm using right now...swapping back and forth as I need it to try stuff.

    Need help with first boot

Ok got my led's working now. Also got the power button working, I can startup and shutdown power using it. However, I still can't get anything to happen on the monitor at all.

    Need help with first boot

I dumbly had just plugged in my break-away 4 pin set (from my 20+4 ATX connection) into my 12v ATX 4-pin connection. I found (I think) the actual 4 pin 12v ATX connector, plugged it in. When I power up my system with (I think), the bare stuff...my cpu fan and 120mm rear fan both spin fine...

    Need help with first boot

Ok, I just tried unplugging the 4 pin 12v ATX connector, and the fans kept spinning just fine. Will proceed to try with complete bare setup, w/ monitor.

    Need help with first boot

Ok, I don't think the PSU fan has moved, I've tried it again and nothing. Does that necessarily mean the PSU is bad or no? Basically it goes like this...I plug the power plug into my psu, then hit the power switch. Both the cpu and rear 120mm fan spin for a half second, as if all components...

    Need help with first boot

Ok, I finally "finished" building my computer and when I try to power it on for it's first boot, my cpu fan, psu fan, and back 120mm fan spin very briefly for about half a second, then stop. I immediately turned off power to the system...what do you the cause of this might be?

Odd issue, even for a pc repairman! Think u can figure it out?

I'm no expert, just throwing stuff out there for you to think about, whether it has been said or not. *bad video card - have you tried with any other card, integrated graphics if applicable? *bad codecs, etc still in the system/registry? *directx conflict/problem? *just pray it's...
