from my linux info center, there's hardly any use of swap, the available percentage is always 100. but in win task manager, i can see certain amount of PF is consumed, why is it like this?

for administration work, i think linux is more efficient. many servers are running on BSD,solaris, unix or linux. apparently, linux is great in performance.:P
Linux is VERY different from Win, if you want to try linux, it will take some time to get familiar to the filesystem and command line interface. i think win and linux are heading different directions, win is more concentrating on the user-friendly interface, but linux is focusing on performance...
how did you install your os? the xp one?
if your os came with your pc, you should have a cd called recovery disk or rescue cd. just like my pc and laptop, the cd can help you to rebuild your os in case of system crash, unfortunely i lost my set of recovery disk, so i need to be VERY careful...

I think you have to reinstall xp, seems your os got so many problems.
if you can get a xp cd or recovery cd, there should be no problem. but the reinstallation my destory your grub loader and you may have to reinstall ubuntu if you still want to keep it in your comp.

Maybe you can check your task manager, to see whether any CPU consuming or MEM consuming processes shows up. you can also run msconfig, click service and switch off some of them
