New thermal compound on North/South bridge?

Thanks for your input guys. I was kinda scared too because I'm using Arctic Silver... Probably should've mentioned that. I went ahead with it and somehow my northbridge ended up running hotter! It was really a pain to get the ceramic crude off of north; it had dried to the core of the chip and I...

New thermal compound on North/South bridge?

My north/south bridge is running hotter than it used to. It's not running dangerously hot. but it is quite a bit hotter 25c about 2-3 years ago, now it's 35c. I've heard that the chips are extreamly delicate underneath the heatsinks. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to apply new...

Try a zero fill utility on the drive before trying another install of XP. It will make sure the disk is completely clean of all partitions and everything. Here is a free one. You can use it as a bootable CD or floppy. http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

    Windows 7 question

If you need remote desktop and domain access go for professional. If you don't know what those are you don't need PRO. The only other features that Ultimate offers is multi-language support and bit locker drive encryption.

How do I set up a WAN File server?

I use a VPN to access all my network resources at home. Transmissions are encrypted too. You'll have to port forward a couple ports and thats all you need for your whole network. You can use your FTP behind that among other things (i.e. Windows File Sharing). Just remember to use a strong...

Level 1 Cache Technology History Question

The L1/L2 caches are like ram for instructions that are being sent to and from processor. This type of memory is much faster than ram and it's a lot more expensive too. lol. I almost deleted it for a moment cause I thought I didn't know what I was talking about.

    Cooling Fan for DSL Modem

Well I'm pretty sure that the equipment is designed to handle the changes in voltage. High humidity may be an issue though. When this router does die go out and find a new brand. XP install from usb drive?

You could also install from a USB CD rom drive. You can pick those up pretty cheap and it's probably the easiest method. I myself have an Eee PC and I used RIS (remote installation services) which comes with Windows 2003 server to replace the dreaded Win 7 Starter that came pre-installed.
