Some loss of connectivity - ? after infection

Win XP home, SP2, AVG9, Spybot (with teatimer), Zonelarm (free). Recently I have lost some internet connectivity. I have had an s3ek.exe infection on my usb stick, which was removed using a tool recommended on an anti-malware forum (sorry, can#t remember which one). I'm not sure if the...

How Can you Clear Sensitive Data From a Flash Drive?

Well, things have to be kept in perspective - it's all a matter of how hard you want to make it to recover the data. It is possible to recover data unless the drive has been totally physically destroyed, but the time, effort and expense would be prohibitive for all except the specialists. I'd...

    Bootable antivirus/antispyware?

Thanks - I'll try bart. I'm not keen on hooking up the drive - never having opened a laptop before. Not hard I'm sure, but I'd feel really bad if I broke his hardware.

    Bootable antivirus/antispyware?

Hi An infection has a good grip on a friend's laptop. I can't log in in regular or safe mode. Is there a bootable free app (WinXP) I could use as my next attempt? I'd only use one that's been recommended - I don't want to make matters worse! Thanks

    Download Managers

I used Wget when I was having trouble d/ling a big game file. As I was doing the download over several days (2 hrs per time) a manager was essential. It worked well for me, but it took a while to work out how to make it resume the d/l on subsequent days, as the source IP kept changing. I'd...

I don't use Outlook myself, but Essential PIM is a very capable calendar and address book. You might like to investigate it. There's a free version.

    Erase everything on hard-drive?

Both my main Win2000 partitions are NTFS. Ticking/unticking drives to wipe makes no difference - still just one option. I do have some other partitions (linux) which are seen by disc management, but it doesn't know what format they are. CCleaner does not list these partitions - they don't have...

    Erase everything on hard-drive?

Interesting - I have v2.24.1010 Running on Win2000 there is only one option in the drop-down menu - "Simple overwrite - 1 pass". On WinXP though, the other options (including Gutmann) are available.

    lost pictures on micro sd

I've used Restoration with lots of success. It can be run from a USB drive - handy if you delete a file off the drive and it doesn't go to recycle bin!

    housekeeping on the computer question?

I'd have thought that a defrag with admin rights would do the whole disc. CCleaner might be more limited though - you can easily find out by running it under admin, then again under a user logon and see if you get new stuff. It's a good question though - when running some antispyware tools...

Copy movies off DVD-R onto HDD?

Lots of advice and guides for this kind of stuff at: www.videohelp.com Select 'DVD backup' from the left. As the user above found - lots of free video conversion tools come with malware because they are very popular.

TFT this is very interesting, I hadn't noticed CCleaner had this function. I can't find the Gutmann setting though - what version are you using pls?

Yes, I have found that site good for a total noob, although some new stuff seems to be included without explanation that meant I had to look elsewhere for clarification.

    Learning to program

I don't know - am I? Opinion seems to be very varied, although many discussion threads suggest VB to start. This is primarily just for my own amusement and to keep my brain a bit active - it doesn't really matter if I never get far with it. Thanks for all your opinions! Oh, and incase anyone...

    Learning to program

Hi I fancied learning some programming. Can you recommend a good online tutorial, and a free compiler to go with it? I was thinking of C++, but I'd be open to suggestions. Many thanks

    Erase everything on hard-drive?

I remember years ago Norton Internet Security had a function to write zeros over the entire blank space on a HDD. This would erase any 'deleted' data but would not affect the OS. It would presumably also take hours. Have you tried searching reputable download sites for applications to do...

File Recovery --- JPEG & AVI

Restoration is the tool I use. I'm not sure it will improve corrupted files though. It simply allows the PC to 'remember' where deleted files used to be.
