    black screen on boot.

A new rig is the perfect time to get a fresh install of windows going. If I were you I'd skip trying repairs, back up the data from the SSD so you don't lose anything, then wipe the SSD clean for a fresh install.

    Multi-purpose server build

I can definitely see what you're saying. I only really plan on running the two VMs though, with lightweight linux distros (yet to be decided). Server 1 - minecraft and terreria, video file sharing, and Server 2 - light traffic web server. Do you think I could get away with that? Jumping...

    Multi-purpose server build

Hey all. It's been awhile. http://secure.newegg.ca/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=25876306 This build is meant to run a bare-metal hypervisor and sport a VM for some game servers (minecraft, terreria, possibly other light game servers) and media, as well as one for a...

    sbavmon.dll

just wanted to point out that in windows 8, msconfig's startup tab refers you to task manager, which now has a startup tab of its own. same steps apply, just in a different location.

    XAMPP installation

So unless I'm misunderstanding you, you havent tried uninstalling since the issue started? Try doing that now. Also, make sure that when you're navigating to that test page, you're using http://localhost/...... and not file:///

    Hang and Crash Curse

does it happen on an absolutely clean install of windows? or does it happen after you reformat AND install all of your stuff? Can you open event viewer and look under custom views > administrative events to see if theres anything noteworthy there? Look for red errors or yellow warnings...

    Crashing how to diagnose?

As spirit pointed out, the GPU could have been overheating and this would cause the kinds of issues you saw. If cleaning out the dust has helped the card may be alright now. If it happens while its clean as well then I'd say its a faulty card.

    Post Your Desktop "Background screenshot"

I don't really understand the point of installing a start menu and customizing it like that. You can pin each of those apps to the start screen which would essentially accomplish the same thing without a third party program. The nice thing about Windows 8 is that you don't need a start menu...

Deleting Windows Files to Free Space

Why do you need a USB stick to save your data when you said you have that 1TB drive in there? Just copy whatever you want to save to the 1TB drive, reformat the SSD and do a clean install of windows 8, copy your files back over and then clean up the HDD. Your settings and programs won't carry...

    Help: Building my computer.

If you consider yourself a power user, you will hate windows 8. If you're more of a media junkie (watch a lot of movies/tv shows, listen to music a lot etc) you may like windows 8 a lot. Gaming will be more or less the same across both OS's. Personally, I would go with Windows 7.

Possible hard drive failure, need second opinion

Seconded. Try with a different SATA cable, and change ports on the mobo if possible for good measure. If you can change to a different power connector as well that'd be bonus. Try reinstalling windows with those changes and see if it still gives BSOD. Pre-manufactured units do use low...

    Computer for programming/casual gaming.

I would wait until next year. Prices will probably change a great deal between now and then, so will parts. We could put together a build for you today but it won't be relevant after that amount of time.

    Keep Getting BlueScreens

OP said that the issue persisted through a change in GPU, not that it started once he replaced it. Have you tried reinstalling directX yet?

    SATA differences????

The only difference is the speed. The cables will run whatever speed your devices are capable of, the connectors on the drive and motherboard are physically the same. All you need to worry about if you are planning on using SATA3 (6 gb/s), is plugging your SATA 3 hard drive or solid state...

    Keep Getting BlueScreens

A quick search in that driver error shows people having success updating their DirectX installs. Maybe give that a shot as well.
