Buying an external hard drive

so there are two different ways that this could go, i could buy an internal HDD and put it into an enclosure and run it that way or i could buy an external hard drive. Which would be the best idea?

FYI: I'm looking at 500gb, with a 7200+ rpms, an 8+ mb cache, and a relatively low seek time.

Is there any brand that i should stay away from? I know that WD and Seagate and Maxtor are all decent and have good reputations.

Please help, thank you

I would go for the premade drive since it's less work, and you there's no chance of screwing it up. I'm always slightly nervous when messing with my computer.

Price wise, it depends on what you buy. I recently bought a 500GB MyBook for 100$ which is cheaper than an internal. Search slickdeals to find a good deal on a drive.
