so i have an old PC. 1,5GB Ram, AMD Sempron. and im installing windows XP on it... now this pc can handle win7 easily but the files were damaged so i reverted to XP.
now the installation has been restarted 5 times! 5 times! like wth this pc sucks! but im going to throw XP off and use Linux as an os but i need a temp one just to make sure i can do stuff lol...

first time it got stuck at 1%
second time it got stuck at 11%
    thirrd time 11%
    fourth time 14%
and 5th time is now at 51% while posting the thread. still think its funny though.

Be sure to completely format your entire HDD before attempting to install an operating system.I recommend Kill Disk.

I actually reccomend DBAN because it overwrites the HDD 3 times making data irrecoverable.

There may be an underlying problem with the HDD. Was there any particular reason the files got corrupted? You may want to test the HDD first.

Yeah it definitely sounds like something wrong with the HD, the only times I've had it get stuck like that were because the HD was nearing the end of its life.

well i fixed it. the problem was that the files on the HDD were corrupted. so i formatted it but somehow the WINDOWS folder didnt want to find the door and leave the hdd. so i had to install the new windows in a different folder, so i made WINDOWS1. i cba to actually format it. now im just O/cing it and installing all drivers needed.

Well Linux Mint Debian has a nice format tool when you install, GParted but you have to partition the HDD yourself so you need to know how much space for your
    linux-swap, /boot and /root.

If Kill Disk cannot format the HDD then HDD is definetely the problem.

However it CAN be that if you have made ANY overclocks in the BIOS,that can cause things like formatting to freeze. So be sure to disable that in the BIOS or LOAD OPTIMAL DEFAULTS and try to format HDD with the KILL DISK again. If it doesn't work or if it freezes at random times again then your HDD is dying.Turn on the S.M.A.R.T. capability in the BIOS if your BIOS has it and it might tell you wether your HDD is dying or not,but it probably does.

NOTE: When using Kill Disk,be sure to select the entire HDD to format and NOT some of it's partitions!!!

    Cheers!
